This study examined how repetitive work environments influence risk perception ability among city bus drivers through the process of risk habituation. Repetitive work characteristics were conceptualized as monotony, repetition frequency, and lack of variability; risk habituation was composed of desensitization to risk stimuli, reduced vigilance, and risk underestimation; and risk perception ability was defined in terms of detection, judgment, and response. Analyses were conducted stepwise at both the higher-order construct level and the subfactor level to determine whether repetitive work exerts a direct effect on risk perception ability or operates indirectly through
    risk habituation.
The results indicated that repetitive work characteristics did not directly impair risk perception ability; rather, their effects were transmitted indirectly through the formation of risk habituation. In other words, the influence of repetitive work environments was better explained by a mediation-centered mechanism in which repeated exposure to risk stimuli accumulates over time, strengthens habituation, and subsequently weakens overall cognitive processes, rather than by immediate cognitive decline.
At the subfactor level, among the characteristics of repetitive work, lack of variability emerged as the most consistent initiating factor in promoting risk habituation. Fixed and unchanging work structures were found to dull responses to risk stimuli and to intensify psychological states characterized by reduced vigilance and the underestimation of risk. Among these, reduced vigilance and risk underestimation exerted consistently negative effects across all stages of risk perception ability-detection, judgment, and response-thereby functioning as key mediating factors driving actual cognitive deterioration. In contrast, while monotony showed broad associations with risk habituation, it was more appropriately interpreted as a contextual condition that facilitates habituation-prone environments rather than as a decisive initiating factor leading directly to impaired risk perception when other repetitive work characteristics were considered simultaneously.
Supplementary analyses of work tenure and experience revealed that risk habituation tended to be relatively elevated in certain tenure groups; however, overall, the structural characteristics of repetitive work itself were more strongly associated with the formation of habituation and cognitive decline than were specific experience-related factors. Taken together, this study moves beyond general explanations of safety issues among city bus drivers based solely on monotony and demonstrates that the structural rigidity of work, particularly the lack of variability, plays a central role in reinforcing risk habituation. Accordingly, safety management in repetitive work environments should extend beyond emphasizing procedural compliance and shift toward strategies that introduce variability into work structures and reactivate vigilance. Practical interventions such as job rotation, periodic stimulus variation, focused monitoring of monotonous segments, and cognitive reset training for mid- and long-tenured drivers may serve as effective measures to mitigate risk habituation and maintain risk perception ability. Nevertheless, because this study is based on a cross-sectional design and self-reported measures, causal interpretations are limited. Future research should adopt longitudinal and experimental approaches incorporating behavioral and physiological indicators to further refine and extend the proposed mediating framework.
