The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the formative characteristics of contemporary fur design, based on 263 fur fashion design items featured in Vogue US from the 2020 S/S season to the 2025 F/W season.
Previous research on fur design focused on qualitative analysis of aesthetic image, style type, and trends. Quantitative studies on comparative analysis of design application between full fur and partial fur—the relationships among silhouette, color, and material, and design features by items category—are limited. To address this gap, this study first explores the definition, texture, and formative characteristics in fur production, and then conducts an empirical analysis of selected Vogue US collection items from 2020 to 2025.
The 263 design items in this study were categorized into full fur design and partial fur design based on the proportion of fur usage, and then further classified into item types, including coats, tunic tops, vests, dresses, two-piece ensembles, skirts, and accessories.
The criteria for analysis were form (silhouette and detail), color- 153 (hue, tone, and color combinations), and material (fur type, texture techniques, prints, and combinations with heterogeneous materials). The analysis showed that full fur design accounted for most items with 161 counts (61%), showing a predominance of H-line silhouettes, natural colors in the YR and Y ranges, achromatic colors around the Bk range, and material compositions predominantly featuring mink and fox fur.
This indicates that the primary formative strategy of emphasizing volume, thermal functionality, and a sense of luxury inherent in fur continues to be sustained in contemporary collections. In contrast, partial fur design accounted for 102 items (39%), and compared to full fur items, in partial fur design, X-line silhouettes, and lighter tones such as pl and sf, and color combinations such as tone-on-tone and camaieu color combinations, were more actively used. This indicates that fur is not the main material of such apparel, but rather a supplemental formal element that contributes to silhouette modulation and harmony with visual accents.
Material analysis revealed that for partial fur, 98 items showed combinations with heterogeneous materials, including synthetic fibers (41.84%), followed by leather (23.47%), natural fibers (20.41%), and knit materials (8.16%). Such combinations with other materials suggest that fur design is used beyond decorative purposes as a formal element to perform functional roles such as weight reduction, improved wearability, structural enhancement, and textural contrast. Furthermore, in terms of fur patterning techniques, in full fur designs, patchwork, horizontal, chevron, vertical, and intarsia techniques were used, whereas in partial fur design, grooving, horizontal, chevron, and laya techniques tended to be used for visual emphasis. In both full and partial fur designs, animal-pattern prints evoking the image of natural fur were prevalent, often executed using silk-screen printing techniques, thereby emphasizing animalistic qualities, a sense of wildness, and visual impact.
Next, the fur items were compared and analyzed by item type for their form, color, and material traits. For coats, H-line silhouettes, long
length, tailored collar, set-in sleeves, and inseam pockets were predominant. Jackets commonly exhibited waist-length H-line silhouettes with refined color contrasts based on camaieu schemes and combination of fox and mink, showing contemporary texture. Jumpers were mainly characterized by functional H-line silhouettes and hip-covering lengths, and distinctive hood-fur integration structures. This confirms that fur design is being reinterpreted as a new formal design language through simplification, restraint in color usage, and expansion of material mixing.
Overall, in contemporary fur design, the formal strategies for full fur and partial fur shows distinctive traits across silhouette, color, material, and technique, reflecting designing adaptation to the functional and diverse demands of the contemporary fashion environment.
This study aspires to contribute to academia by quantitatively exploring the formal characteristics of contemporary fur design based
on five years of Vogue US collections, and hopefully serves as a key material for future studies and product planning for fur fashion design.
