Songwol Spa Space Design Applying Tactile Experience Components and Expressive Methods Today's brand spaces often show a pronounced tendency to focus solely on visual elements. The importance of multisensory experiences that users can physically feel and experience is often overlooked. Among the various senses, ‘tactile sensation’—closely linked to the body and providing both emotional stability and tangible experience—tends to receive relatively less attention in the spatial design process. This research originated from this awareness of the issue. It focused on the brand identity of ‘Songwol Towel,’ which has built unique tactile assets centered around ‘towels’ for over 70 years. To effectively embody Songwol Towel's image of softness and trust within a physical space, a spa space, centered on the core value of sensory recovery for users, was selected as the primary research subject. Before commencing this research, a theoretical review identified key elements of tactile experiences in interior spaces. These elements were categorized as material texture, visual tactility created by light, and spatial ornamentation. Based on this framework, domestic brand space cases were analyzed to examine how tactile expressions are implemented and perceived in actual spaces. Through this process, an analytical framework applicable to the design analysis in this study was established. Furthermore, analysis of Songwol Towel's brand assets revealed that the ‘feeling of close contact with the skin’ and ‘emotional comfort’ provided by the towel were identified as its most crucial values. Grounded in theory and multiple case analyses, this study refrained from viewing tactile experience merely as a matter of material properties or the manipulation of individual senses. Instead, it redefined tactility as a structured experience where a series of processes—moving or lingering within the space, making direct contact—progress sequentially. Applying this approach to the Songwol Spa space design, the program was structured in stages, circulation density was meticulously controlled, and lighting and materials were designed to gradually change. This strategy allowed the tactile experience to naturally permeate and diffuse throughout the entire space. The third-floor public spa features an open ceiling allowing natural light to fall onto the water, emphasizing the unique texture of water and inducing an experience that expands the user's senses. Conversely, the private spa is designed as an independent space isolated from the exterior. By appropriately utilizing the density of various materials and indirect lighting, it creates a dense tactile space where users can focus on their bodily sensations. This study highlights that tactility in brand spaces transcends being merely an auxiliary sense that enhances atmosphere. Through spatial design, it demonstrates how tactility can function as a core principle driving the entire experience—from the initial stages of planning and structuring the space, to designing circulation paths and creating the physical environment. Furthermore, this research shows that tactility-centered spatial planning can serve as a design methodology that effectively translates a brand's unique sensory assets into spatial experiences.
