As service environments where humans and robots share the same space continue to expand, autonomous navigation in narrow space
environments(NSEs)—such as indoor corridors and crosswalks—has emerged as a critical challenge.
In such environments, navigation strategies must go beyond simple collision avoidance to interpret the surrounding spatial
structure and pedestrian movement, enabling safe and socially compliant path selection.
This study proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based path planning framework that enables a mobile robot to identify and
navigate through safe and open spaces while interacting with pedestrians in real time. The proposed framework fuses 3D LiDAR and
RGB camera data to detect individual pedestrians and estimate their positions and velocities.
Based on this information, a Human-Aware Occupancy Map (HAOM) is generated by integrating static obstacles with dynamic danger zones,
which is then utilized as the state input for reinforcement learning. The proposed method was trained and evaluated across various
simulated environments, including straight, L-shaped, and intersection corridors. Experimental results demonstrate that the method achieves
higher success rates and lower collision rates compared to conventional path planning algorithms. This research demonstrates the feasibility of achieving safe and socially aware autonomous navigation in confined human–robot shared spaces.
