This study reexamines the limitations of conventional formalistic design discourse and explores process-centered design possibilities that emphasize relational and generative thinking.
To this end, it focuses on the work of Anne Holtrop, whose architecture emphasizes spatial formation through interactions between materials and environmental conditions. Based on Holtrop’s theoretical background, this study defines the concept of “material gesture” and analyzes it through four characteristics: trace, process, correspondence, and emergence. The analysis shows that these characteristics do not operate independently but are interrelated within a flexible, non-hierarchical structure. These characteristics did not adhere to a fixed hierarchy or a fixed order of operation, but instead manifested in varying intensities and arrangements depending on the project's conditions and context. However, a recurring trend was observed: traces served as the starting point of design; process and correspondence mediated spatial formation in the intermediate stages; and ultimately, emergence was more often expressed in terms of form and perception. This demonstrates Anne Holtrop's architectural approach to space discovery, embracing the traces of place and time, inducing the interaction between environment and material through the production process, and fostering a design approach.
Based on the analysis derived from the previous process, the feasibility of applying the concept of "material gesture" to the Gwangjuyo Cultural Complex was examined and proposed. The main proposals are summarized as follows. First, a corridor was introduced at the first-floor entrance as a device to coordinate the user’s senses. Rather than simply serving as a passageway, the corridor regulates the user’s gaze and movement speed, gradually guiding spatial perception. This allows users to engage with the space while recognizing their surroundings and choosing their own direction. Second, in the food and beverage space, ceramics function not as exhibition objects but as mediators for building relationships through use. By interacting directly with the ceramics, visitors move beyond visual experience toward tactile engagement. The spatial composition, using wood and a kiln, evokes the environment and conditions in which ceramics are made. Third, the archival space encourages the perception of history through experiencing the depth and rhythm of space, rather than simply acquiring chronology as knowledge. By revealing layers of time through material surfaces such as walls, the museum enables the experience of accumulated time through traces embedded in the material. Fourth, the repetitive use of stairs and arches expands the sense of curvature inherent in ceramics. By controlling the opening and obstruction of views, the museum encourages gradual spatial relationships rather than immediate perception. This allows users to interpret space through different paths and perspectives, forming layered judgments instead of fixed perceptions.
This study confirms that Anne Holtrop's perspective, which understands architecture not as a complete form but as a continuously evolving event, offers important implications for contemporary spatial design discourse.
