In medical and healthcare environments, there is an increasing demand for non-contact and unconstrained monitoring technologies capable of continuously observing vital signs to assess a user’s health status. Accordingly, Doppler radar–based vital sign detection has gained significant attention. This thesis proposes an adaptive bio-radar system for estimating respiration and heart rate, and develops a signal processing algorithm that enhances the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of cardiac signals and automatically selects the intrinsic mode function(IMF) levels containing vital information using empirical mode decomposition(EMD), without requiring prior knowledge of the input signals.
Respiration typically has an amplitude more than ten times larger than that of heartbeat signals, and its harmonics appear in frequency bands adjacent to the heart rate, thereby degrading detection performance. To address this issue, the proposed method uses EMD to decompose the nonlinear radar signal into IMFs across different frequency bands, synthesizes arbitrary respiration harmonics, and removes these components from the IMF containing the heart rate. Compared with conventional FFT-based and basic EMD-based approaches, the proposed technique improves the cardiac SNR by 22.3 dB and 20.3 dB, respectively, achieving average heart rate accuracies of 97.5% in the stationary state and 92.8% during walking at 2 km/h.
Because time-varying noise affects the decomposition structure, the IMF levels containing vital signals are not fixed. To ensure reliable identification, this thesis analyzes the phase spectrum characteristics of each IMF to estimate valid frequency ranges and automatically determine the IMF levels containing respiration and heart rate. By adaptively selecting IMFs without prior information, the proposed algorithm improves respiration and heart rate extraction accuracy by 3.3% and 11.6%, respectively, compared to SNR-based selection methods, and demonstrates strong potential for continuous vital sign monitoring.
Furthermore, this research extends beyond controlled laboratory conditions and applies the proposed bio-radar system in real clinical settings for non-contact monitoring of patients’ vital information. Clinical experiments were conducted with patients performing rehabilitation exercises, and respiratory rate variations were analyzed according to exercise intensity. In high-intensity cases where subjects exhibited respiration and heart rates beyond normal ranges, the respiration rates extracted from the bio-radar showed trends similar to those measured by a standard medical device, achieving a high mean correlation coefficient of over 0.7 across consecutive measurements.
