international trends have continued to strengthen the expansion of public mental health–based policies that integrate the social value of the arts, such as arts-based social prescribing. In Korea, institutional settings referred to as cultural arts healing have gradually expanded based on cultural arts education policies. However, compared to conceptual discussions surrounding the distinctions and definitions between cultural arts healing (Yesul-Chiyu, 예술치유) and arts therapy (Yesul-Chiryo, 예술치료), research focusing on practitioners’ lived experiences in the field, as well as their roles and identities, remains limited. Within this gap in field-based research, the present study aimed to explore how practical experiences in cultural arts healing settings shape, adjust, and construct the roles and identities of art therapists. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven art therapists who had experience planning and implementing art-based programs within cultural arts healing initiatives. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis with a reflexive approach.
The analysis identified three main themes: conflicts between institutional constraints and identity practice; the enactment of art therapist identity in practice; and the expansion of identity into practice-based knowledge. Participants entered the field with expectations of realizing their professional expertise and identity; however, they experienced role conflict and practical limitations due to art-centered structures and institutional constraints. Nevertheless, they flexibly negotiated these constraints by drawing on their professional expertise and identity as art therapists. Through relational engagement, participants rediscovered the meaning of healing, reconfigured their professional identity, and explored directions for improving cultural arts healing practice environments, demonstrating an ongoing identity process. These findings articulate the limitations encountered by art therapists within expanded fields of practice such as cultural arts healing initiatives, as well as the strategies through which they respond to these challenges. At the same time, the results reveal, in a patterned and detailed manner, the processes through which art therapists perform and construct their roles and identities in practice. This study is meaningful in that it presents an empirical example of applying reflexive thematic analysis to research on art therapists’ roles and identity. Furthermore, by clarifying how art therapists actively enact their professionalism and construct their identities amid confusion and conflict within the complex context of cultural arts healing, this study provides foundational data for strengthening professional identity and expertise in future institutional development and expanded field-based practice.
