This study addresses a current issue in lifestyle brand marketing and spatial design. As lifestyle proposals are increasingly reduced to sensory images and short-term trends, limitations have become apparent in both sustainable brand strategies and their spatial implementation. Focusing on ‘Compact Life’, a lifestyle concept proposed by MUJI, this study examines its concept and characteristics, derives spatial implementation methods based on the concept, and applies them to the design of a MUJI Brand Store and Stay.
To achieve this objective, the study was conducted through the following research methods and processes, and the final findings are summarized as follows.
First, through a theoretical examination of MUJI’s ‘Compact Life’, the study confirms that Compact Life can be defined as an attitude toward living that reorganizes judgment criteria regarding ‘what is important’ and ‘what is sufficient’ based on everyday culture, and that organizes daily life so these criteria can be repeatedly applied. This concept is grounded in cultural notions such as local production for local consumption, an attitude of living in harmony with nature, learning from the past, everyday wisdom, emptiness and simplicity, and consumption ethics. Its characteristics are categorized into three groups: creating criteria, including judgment, non-ostentation, and moderation; organizing daily life, including flexibility and unit-based organization; and forming continuity, including temporality, adjustability, and learnability.
Second, to derive spatial implementation methods for Compact Life, case studies of MUJI brand stores, residential projects, and hotel spaces were analyzed based on the concept and characteristics of Compact Life. The analysis led to the following methods.
    (1) Organizing flows of information and action to encourage users to judge what is important and what is sufficient, allowing the act of setting criteria itself to function as a spatial experience.
    (2) Planning space as a structure that allows combination, separation, and adjustment so that living scenes can be edited through use. A large base space is maintained, while flexible boundaries, furniture arrangements, and overlapping or shifting programs enable users to reconfigure space according to their own conditions.
    (3) Establishing structures that allow Compact Life to operate as a repeatedly applicable criterion by maintaining its validity over time. Rather than fixing form, the structure allows criteria to persist under changing conditions.
Third, the derived spatial implementation methods were translated into design language and applied to the MUJI Brand Store and Stay project to examine the spatial applicability of the Compact Life concept. For this application, the attitude toward living proposed by Compact Life was organized into a conceptual axis of Nature, As It Should Be, and No Brand. Design principles were then established to enable these concepts to operate in space. These principles were articulated through emptiness, a single large space with flexible partitions, relationships and expansion through windows, transitional interior–exterior spaces, and infrastructure that maintains order, including storage. Based on these principles, the following design strategies were proposed.
    (1) In the Compact Life store space, exhibition density and circulation speed are adjusted, and products, materials, and usage scenes are presented in stages within the same module to establish comparable choices and criteria of sufficiency.
    (2) In the Compact Life stay space, functions are not fixed but allowed to overlap. A 3,000 mm by 3,000 mm module is used as a base to combine furniture, storage, and flexible elements, enabling users to actively transform space according to different situations.
    (3) Restrained and maintainable materials are emphasized, and structures are designed so that parts of programs, furniture, and storage elements can be replaced or rearranged. This enables repeated use and adjustment, allowing qualitative spatial criteria to be maintained over time.
