In contemporary society, funeral culture is rapidly shifting from traditional burial to cremation and interment, driven by rapid urbanization and evolving social values. Communal death rituals of the past, where grief was shared, have diminished. Instead, death has been reduced to a matter requiring rapid processing within institutional frameworks such as hospitals and funeral homes. This shift has entrenched columbariums as merely functional spaces for the storage of remains, depriving the bereaved of the emotional space needed to fully mourn their loss and reflect on the meaning of death. Therefore, modern columbariums must evolve from being perceived as unwanted facilities or simple repositories into spaces of sublime experience where life and death coexist, offering deep comfort and healing to the bereaved. Mark Rothko’s color field paintings evoke fundamental human emotions through color, light, and immense scale—devoid of language and representational forms—thereby embodying the ‘aesthetics of the sublime.’ Accordingly, this study aims to theoretically establish Rothko's concept of the sublime and reinterpret it as a principle of spatial design. The ultimate goal is to propose specific spatial design strategies that transform modern columbariums from functional facilities into healing spaces capable of fostering deep emotion and contemplation. This study theoretically examines changes in funeral culture and the role of memorial spaces, reinterpreting Mark Rothko’s concept of the sublime as principles for spatial design. Consequently, four spatial characteristics manifesting the sublime were derived: Infinity (Transcendence), Invisibility (Absence), Immateriality, and Staticity. These were verified through case studies of nine modern cremation and columbarium facilities in Europe to analyze their implementation in actual spaces. First, Infinity grants visitors a sense of awe and transcendent perception through scales that overwhelm the human body and the expansion of boundaries. Second, Invisibility blocks interpretation by erasing specific symbols and narratives, allowing visitors to focus on the absence of the deceased and their own inner emotions. Third, Immateriality sublimates solid architectural materials into a spiritual atmosphere through the juxtaposition of light and darkness, leading to the perception of death as a transition to a new dimension. Fourth, Staticity constructs a space of silence disconnected from external noise, encouraging visitors to stop, delve into their inner selves, and experience psychological purification.Based on these findings, this study proposes a columbarium project titled ‘Between Absence and Light’, located in Ui-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. This proposal utilizes the topography, which harmonizes with the natural environment of Bukhansan Mountain, aiming to create a healing space where life, death, and nature blend without boundaries. In particular, the design maximizes the sublime experience by separating the circulation paths of first-time mourners and returning visitors according to their emotional states, and by employing vertical spatiality and light that permeates through darkness. This spatial plan suggests the possibility of a new funeral culture space that transforms the columbarium—previously perceived as an avoided facility—into a place of sublime contemplation and memory, embracing death as part of life.
