This study focuses on one of the characteristics of contemporary architectural space design, which understands space not as a fixed function or form but as a field generated within relationships and flows, and presents Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of “Smooth Space” as a core concept to explain this, and aims to propose spatial design methods based on its conceptual characteristics and to apply them to a Learning Commons spatial plan. This study was conducted through the following three research methods and processes in order to achieve the above objective, and the final research results derived are as follows. First, a theoretical examination of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of “Smooth Space”: Smooth space, unlike the modern spatial concept that presupposes hierarchy, boundaries, and segmentation, is a concept that allows space to be understood as a processual and relational field through the five characteristics of non-hierarchy, continuity, multiplicity, ambiguity, and self-organization. This shows that it has important philosophical implications in that it understands space not as a fixed form or stable order, but as a process that is continuously generated and reconstructed. Second, an analysis and examination of the spatial realization methods of the concept of “Smooth Space”: In order to analyze the spatial realization methods of the concept of “Smooth Space,” architectural cases of SANAA, Sou Fujimoto, and Junya Ishigami, which are characterized by ambiguous interior–exterior boundaries and multi-layered and fluid spatial structures, were selected, and based on the five characteristics of the “Smooth Space” concept derived above, the methods of spatial realization were analyzed and organized, and five spatial realization methods were derived: 1) non-centralized spatial organization, 2) indeterminate circulation, 3) overlapping and variability of programs, 4) fluidization of interior–exterior boundaries, and 5) active intervention of environmental elements. Third, application to the Learning Commons spatial plan: The five spatial realization methods derived in the previous process were applied to the “KU Commons Spatial Plan,” which can be used as a new future-oriented space for learning, exchange, and rest of the S Library of K University, and the applicability of the spatial realization methods of the “Smooth Space” concept was examined and proposed. The main proposed contents are summarized as follows. Non-hierarchy: A field was implemented in which students’ diverse activities of learning, exchange, and rest are carried out flexibly and subjectively by users through a dispersed spatial composition, without determining a specific central space or main circulation. Continuity: Circulation and spatial compositions were proposed in which the interior and exterior, and the upper and lower levels, are naturally connected without disconnection or boundaries, so that dynamic and active user-participatory programs are realized rather than the accommodation of fixed programs.
Multiplicity: Together with continuity, multiplicity based on indeterminate spatial programs proposed a parallel spatial composition that provides a high degree of freedom in the application of each program and content, and through this, it was made possible to support students’ autonomous and subject-oriented learning, exchange, and rest activities. Ambiguity: Horizontal and vertical circulation plans connecting open wall-type doors and shared spaces were proposed so that the functions and boundaries of space are not fixed, and so that the character of space changes freely according to users’ choices and interpretations. Self-organization: The major spatial programs and shared spaces were horizontally networked so that spatial usage patterns are formed in a fluid and active manner according to users’ behaviors, modes of occupation, and environmental conditions, and this was actively proposed through the introduction of flexible systems so that it can also be developed as the functional expandability of space.
