This thesis examines my sculptural and installation practice in relation to the structural fragility concealed beneath the illusory surfaces of contemporary life, focusing on my solo exhibition 『Leaning on a Fragile Pillar』. Taking as its starting point the precarious housing conditions of young adults living on the urban periphery and the transient spectacles of contemporary capitalism, the study investigates how these experiences are reflected in my work. I analyse such provisional modes of dwelling and spectacular phenomena, and articulate the critical questions that arise from them through the theoretical frameworks of Roland Barthes’s mythologies, Guy Debord’s theory of the spectacle, and Michel Foucault’s thought. In particular, works such as <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Leaning on a Fragile Pillar> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Ashes and Masses> explore the structural vulnerability of objects whose surface and support are split apart, as well as the ideological operations of illusory events like fireworks displays.
Contemporary objects, architectures, and events circulate us as if the surface were detached from any stable substance. These surfaces emit a kind of borrowed vitality drawn from their material substrate, briefly manifesting before our eyes only to disappear sooner than the underlying reality. Such overly naturalised and seductive spectacles train us to accept what is “more real than the real” as self-evident. Screens, artificial turf, faux-wood veneers, and fireworks disguise themselves as images more convincing than reality itself, quietly seeping into the spaces of everyday life. My work originates from a sense of strangeness toward these spectacular images camouflaged within the ordinary.
At the same time, my own conditional living arrangements as a young migrant to the city have made the objects in my room operate increasingly as images rather than durable belongings. Goods designed around low cost and efficiency, commonly chosen by newcomers to society, are often constructed with a split between surface and core. they break easily and have short lifespans. These fragile, disposable things mirror young people who struggle for a better life yet are likewise treated as if they were to be used once and discarded. The flimsy structures and physical hollowness beneath pleasing surfaces echo my own unstable housing on the city’s margins, whereas traces such as torn wallpaper, nail holes, and lifted seams insist more forcefully on the real than any perfectly smooth image.
This research critically reflects on everyday spaces filled with objects that, having lost durability, function only as images, and on a contemporary environment saturated with spectacular image-events. Collective spectacles such as fireworks festivals operate as modern myths that naturalise the logic of capitalism as a seemingly inevitable order, which we consume without question. Within these conditions, I focus on the clues to existence and the sensations of the real that emerge through cracks, gaps, and moments of failure. By giving sculptural form to the fragility and instability that everyday objects strive to conceal, my work seeks to probe the relationship between objects and human beings, as well as how we enjoy and represent “nature.” In doing so, this thesis aims to re-recognise the realities latent behind contemporary surfaces and to explore the artistic possibilities for shifting our modes of perception and thought.
