Epidemiological and Clinical Characteristics of Ophthalmic Diseases in Geckos in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (2022–2025) Kim, Dong-Hoo Department of Applied Clinical Veterinary Medicine Graduate School of Veterinary Biosecurity and Protection Konkuk University Epidemiological data on ocular diseases in specific regions, species, and breeds have significant clinical relevance. In veterinary medicine, several epidemiological studies have examined ocular diseases in companion animals such as dogs and cats, as well as in laboratory and livestock species. However, no study to date has investigated the epidemiology of ocular disease in geckos. This study aimed to address this gap by evaluating the prevalence and clinical characteristics of ocular diseases in pet geckos presented to veterinary hospitals in South Korea. From January 2022 to September 2025, I retrospectively analyzed the medical records of geckos presented to Gogang Animal Hospital (Bucheon, South Korea) with ophthalmic complaints, including blepharospasm and corneal opacity. A total of 205 patients were included. Among the 201 patients with known ages, the mean age was 1.59 ± 1.59 years. Of the 160 individuals with known sex, 97 were female and 63 were male; this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). This study focused on two commonly kept species in South Korea: leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius, 79.5%) and crested geckos (Correlophus ciliatus, 20.5%). Corneal and spectacle diseases were the most frequently diagnosed conditions (65.37%, p = 0.00). Eyelid and adnexal diseases, such as periocular abscesses (13.66%), occurred significantly more often than uveal diseases (5.37%). Orbital and globe diseases (0.98%) were observed but did not reach statistical significance. Some patients were initially misinterpreted as having ocular disease when no ocular pathology was present, or when systemic moribundity prevented normal eye opening. Most ocular abnormalities, particularly dysecdysis, were associated with systemic conditions. This study establishes the first epidemiological baseline for ophthalmic disorders in captive geckos in South Korea, highlighting corneal and spectacle-related diseases associated with shedding and husbandry deficiencies, and underscoring the need for improved owner education and early veterinary intervention.
