Copper-Based Catalyst Design for Selective Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia Kooyoung Jung Department of Chemical Engineering Graduate School of Konkuk University Ammonia is not only an essential chemical feedstock for the fertilizer industry but has also emerged as a promising carbon-free energy carrier. However, the conventional Haber–Bosch process requires extreme temperature and pressure conditions, resulting in high energy consumption and substantial CO₂ emissions. As a sustainable alternative, the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) enables direct NH₃ production due to the high solubility of nitrate and the relatively low N=O bond energy. Nonetheless, the multistep proton–electron transfer pathway and the strong competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) necessitate the development of catalysts that are both highly selective and efficient. Among various candidate materials, copper-based catalysts are particularly attractive due to their strong affinity toward nitrate adsorption and their capability to effectively promote the rate-determining NO3 - to NO2 - conversion. However, at more negative potentials, HER becomes dominant, leading to diminished NO3RR selectivity; therefore, rational catalyst design is required to suppress HER while enhancing nitrate conversion. In this study, ultrathin Cu2O nanosheets (Cu2O NS) were synthesized and systematically compared with Cu2O (100) cubes and Cu2O (111) octahedra to elucidate the influence of morphology and exposed facets on NO₃RR performance. Structural and chemical analyses (XRD, XPS, Auger) confirmed the successful formation of each Cu2O structure prior to electrolysis, while Cu2O NS preserved their characteristic 2D morphology after reaction, contributing to enhanced stability. Electrochemical measurements in an H-cell demonstrated that Cu2O NS achieved a Faradaic efficiency of 98.67% and a current density of −225.41 mA cm-2 at −1.7 V vs RHE, outperforming both Cu2O (100) and Cu2O (111). Under industrially relevant conditions in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), Cu2O NS delivered a Faradaic efficiency of 71.18% at 100 mA cm-2 and sustained an average efficiency of 67.6% with a stable cell voltage of 2.89 V during 24 h of continuous operation. To verify the formation of reaction intermediates during NO₃RR, in-situ Raman spectroscopy was conducted, providing additional evidence supporting the improved surface environment of Cu2O NS for selective nitrate reduction. These electrochemical and spectroscopic insights are consistent with the enhanced selectivity and suppressed HER activity observed for Cu2O NS. Overall, this work demonstrates that ultrathin Cu2O NS provide an advantageous catalytic platform for efficient electrochemical ammonia production from nitrate. Furthermore, the industrial implementation of electrochemical NH₃ synthesis could be extended to integrated processes such as electrochemical urea synthesis via coupling with CO2 reduction, highlighting broader opportunities for sustainable nitrogen–carbon conversion. The findings of this study offer important design principles for tailoring Cu- based oxide electrocatalysts and contribute to the advancement of scalable NO 3RR technologies for environmental remediation and green ammonia production.
