The Purpose of this study is to examine the relation of ‘Eros’ and ‘Ideal Polis’ within the context of education. From an educational perspective, Eros is the primordial force which enables the imagination of Ideal Polis; Ideal Polis is the ultimate purpose of Eros. Eros is grounded in and conveyed on ancient Greek ethos; Ideal Polis, the Educational State, is the ultimate objective of communal Eros, centered on Eros of Philosopher King which represents the essence of educational relationship.
Concept of teacher`s authority and learner`s human right is frequently discussed in recent pedagogical studies. It tends to be analyzed in the abstract, in isolation from the specificity of the relationship between teacher and learner formed in educational situations. However, teacher`s authority and learner`s human right must be understood within the specific educational context.
In order to understand the Teacher-Student relationship, it is necessary to focus on the educational dynamics that bind them. The Erotic relation presented in Plato's dialogue, the subject-mediated Eros within the reciprocal relation between Socrates and his interlocutors, provides vital clues for understanding the relationship between teacher and learner from a perspective distinct from modern interpretations.
Generally, Eros is associated with Greek male homosexuality, often emphasizing the intense emotional interaction between individuals. However, from a view of education, Eros corresponds to an intellectual-emotional bond between teacher and learner. It can be understood as a transcendent movement that cultivates the mind of both. Eros is an upward movement toward beauty, and the Erotic relation between teacher and learner seeking truth represents ideal dynamics that teacher and learner must dream of.
However, Eros is not merely a movement between individual teachers and individual learners. The Greeks, who dreamed of the Arete-excellence of life-and aspired for a beautiful life than anyone else, enthusiastically praised Eros throughout Greece. For the Greeks, Eros was a national ideal, and Plato sheds light on the political-social implications of Eros accepted by the Greeks at the time through conversations between Socrates and his interlocutors in Symposium and Phaedrus.
The political-social meaning of Eros can be examined in greater detail by analyzing the Republic as theory of Plato's Ideal Polis. Typically, the Republic tends to be understood as a political-philosophical blueprint for a just Polis. However, the dynamics of Eros between Socrates and the interlocutors suggest that the discussion of the Ideal Polis is intrinsically linked to the educational relationship between teacher and learner. In particular, the contrasting Eros of the two rulers, the Philosopher king and the tyrant, presented in the Republic once again emphasizes the political-social meaning of Eros in that it determines the destiny of the Polis.
In Plato's three dialogues dealing with Eros, Symposium, Phaedrus and the Republic, Eros is captured not merely as the subject matter, but is also captured as an educational dynamic between Socrates and the interlocutors. To grasp the Eros circulating among the characters, it is necessary to concentrate on Plato's work of writing, the book as a play, literary form: the dialogue as drama. This requires examining specific dramatic elements, such as the setting of the conversation and the roles of the participating characters. Because emotions and thoughts of the interlocutors are implicitly embedded in the interactions between the characters.
By analyzing the Erotic relation between Socrates and his interlocutors presented in the three dialogues based on their dramatic significance, it turns out that the Teacher-Student relationship is inextricably linked to the ideal life they should dream of, that is, the Ideal Polis. The Eros between teacher and learner being in truth serves as the driving force that presents the ideal life they must dream of, and the Ideal Polis corresponds to the image of an ideal community captured within educational praxis between teacher and learner. In this respect, Eros, the most personal love between individuals, ultimately becomes a fundamental force that reveals the ideal community to which citizens within the Polis should dream, and the Ideal Polis becomes the ultimate objective for Eros.
The Ideal Polis is an image of the state which Eros, national ideal of the whole community, is sublimated into the aspiration of education. It does not merely refer to relationship between individual teachers and learners. Plato's vision of an Ideal Polis, an Educational State, is a community respected and praised not only by the educational participants but also by all members of the state. It is where the educational praxis of teacher and learner who aspire to the Ideal Polis based on intellectual-emotional ties mediated by truth is in essence. The Educational State is a community, where education as the ultimate standard, revered by its members, and where citizens aspire to protect and dream of a beautiful educational dynamic that portrays an ideal life through fulfillment of their respective roles.
Teacher's authority and learner's human right must be understood within the context of the educational relationship praised and protected in this Educational State. Teacher`s authority is established only when teachers themselves love truth more than anyone else and strive to share the beauty they have discerned with learner; learner's human right acquire meaning only when the learners follows and learn from the teacher who loves the beauty of truth and endeavors to show it.
