With the rapid diffusion of livestreaming functions on short-form video platforms in China, parent–child emotional livestreams have emerged as an important channel for alleviating parenting anxiety and acquiring childcare knowledge. In particular, the repeated consumption of such content has become increasingly common among parents in their thirties. Focusing on this phenomenon, the present study examines parent–child livestreams on TikTok and investigates the psychological and cognitive mechanisms that shape users’ intentions to continue using these streams.
The theoretical framework begins with the Uses and Gratifications Theory to explain the underlying motivations that drive parents to access livestream content. The Technology Acceptance Model is then incorporated to capture the cognitive evaluation process through the construct of perceived usefulness. Furthermore, two additional psychological variables — flow experience and self-identity — are introduced to analyze how emotional immersion and a sense of social belonging mediate the relationship between perceived usefulness and continued usage intention. This integrated framework allows for a sequential understanding of “usage motivation → cognitive and emotional evaluation → behavioral intention.”
A total of 612 valid responses were collected using scene-based sampling. Empirical tests were conducted through reliability and validity analyses, exploratory factor analysis, structural equation modeling with SPSSAU, and a bootstrap resampling method to verify mediation effects. The findings reveal that perceived usefulness exerts a direct positive influence on continuous usage intention, while flow experience and self-identity serve as significant partial mediators in the relationship between perceived usefulness and continued use. Notably, higher emotional engagement and stronger identity recognition correspond to a more pronounced willingness to repeatedly access parent–child livestream content.
The majority of respondents were parents aged 30–39, with a higher proportion of women and a predominantly college-educated demographic. This indicates that parent–child livestreams play a role beyond information acquisition by providing emotional support and facilitating a social support system for childcare. By analyzing user behavior across cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions, this study complements existing research that has predominantly focused on entertainment content and demonstrates practical implications for optimizing livestream content and platform management strategies. The findings also contribute to filling theoretical gaps in the field of parent–child livestream user behavior.
