Anode-Free Lithium Metal Batteries (AFLMBs) offer significant advantages by eliminating the need for anode active materials, thereby simplifying the manufacturing process and achieving higher gravimetric and volumetric energy densities compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. These characteristics have attracted considerable attention as a next-generation energy storage system. However, AFLMBs face critical challenges during charge/discharge cycling, where lithium ions undergo plating/stripping on the copper current collector. This process leads to non-uniform lithium deposition, resulting in dendrite growth and irreversible lithium loss, which cause safety concerns and capacity degradation. To address these issues, various strategies have been explored, including current collector modification, electrolyte additives, and additional lithium sources in the cathode.
In this study, a ZnO/Nano Perforated Graphene (NPG) composite was synthesized via spontaneous redox reactions between Zn and Graphene Oxide (GO) and catalytic carbon gasification. The synthesized composite was uniformly spray-coated onto Cu foil to fabricate lithiophilic anodes. ZnO and carbonyl groups (C=O) in the ZnO/NPG composite reduce the nucleation energy barrier, promoting uniform lithium deposition. Additionally, nanopores in graphene increase lithiophilic site, shorten lithium-ion diffusion pathways, and alleviate local current density, enabling more uniform and reversible lithium plating and stripping. The spray coating method achieved an initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.14 % through the formation of a thin coating layer, attributed to enhanced lithium-ion diffusion and reduced irreversible lithium consumption during SEI formation.
Electrochemical evaluation of the fabricated lithiophilic anode demonstrated that the ZnO/NPG electrode exhibited a high Coulombic efficiency of 98.85 % and a low overpotential of 19.4 mV over 300 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm² in half cell configuration. ZnO/NPG maintained uniform lithium deposition and stable electrode structure even after cycling. In full-cell evaluation, it achieved a Coulombic efficiency of 98.96 % and a capacity retention of 50.89 % over 150 cycles at 0.5 mA/cm², demonstrating superior cycling stability compared to bare Cu and rGO.
This study demonstrates that the ZnO/NPG composite-based lithiophilic anode contributes to uniform lithium deposition and improved cycling stability, suggesting the practical potential for anode-free lithium metal batteries.
