In addition to the problem of saturation of landfills in the domestic metropolitan area, the importance of intermediate treatment processes including incineration and recycling is emerging due to the policy of prohibiting direct landfills from 2026 in addition to the problem of landfills. In particular, among the household wastes, the amount of waste synthetic land is continuously increasing, but the material recycling rate is remarkably small, so a large part is simply incinerated, which is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the effect of reducing greenhouse gases when a pyrolysis facility is introduced into an incineration facility in the metropolitan area and the waste synthetic resin is treated separately, and to derive policy implications for achieving carbon neutrality. In addition, by selecting representative facilities in each region of Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do, the generation and throughput of volume-based waste were predicted according to the time series change, and CO2 emissions were calculated. As a result, it was predicted that the amount of volume-based waste generated in the three facilities in the metropolitan area would continue to increase until 2030, and it was found that CO2 reduction could be achieved up to 87% when the pyrolysis technology was introduced compared to the total incineration in the future. Therefore, it is expected that the introduction of pyrolysis technology by selecting waste synthetic resins will reduce the incineration load from the ban on direct landfilling in the metropolitan area and contribute to revitalizing the circular economy in connection with the K-ETS.
