OPC를 기준으로 NS(1, 2, 3, 5, 7 wt%) 및 SF(1, 2, 3, 5, 7 wt%)

This study aims to investigate the combined effects of accelerated carbonation curing (ACC) and the incorporation of nano-silica (NS) and silica fume (SF) on the microstructural development and mechanical performance of cement paste, as a materials-engineering approach toward carbon neutrality in the cement industry. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was partially replaced with NS (1, 2, 3, 5, 7 wt%) and SF (1, 2, 3, 5, 7 wt%), and all specimens were subjected to ACC under
controlled conditions of 20% CO₂, 20 °C, and 65% RH. The physical and chemical properties were evaluated at 3, 7, and 28 days through measurements of carbonation depth, compressive strength, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA–DTG), scanning electron microscopy in backscattered mode (SEM–BSE), XRD–Rietveld quantification, and BSE image–based porosity and pore-size distribution.
The results revealed that the carbonation depth increased most significantly in mixtures incorporating 3–5 wt% NS and 3 wt% SF, which is attributed to the role of fine silica particles in promoting nucleation during carbonation and altering CO₂ transport pathways, thereby increasing the effective reaction surface. Compressive strength generally increased under ACC compared with OPC, with the highest strength gains observed in mixtures containing 3–5 wt% NS and 3 wt% SF at both 7 and 28 days. This improvement is attributed to the filling action of carbonation-derived CaCO₃ and the formation and rearrangement of C–S–H gel induced by fine silica additives, which collectively densify the microstructure.
TGA–DTG analysis confirmed a marked decrease in Ca(OH)₂ and a corresponding increase in CaCO₃ under ACC, indicating the direct contribution of carbonation reactions to microstructural evolution. XRD–Rietveld analysis further showed an increase in calcite and a reduction in CH peaks in carbonated specimens. In some NS-blended mixtures, a more distinct broad hump associated with C–S–H was observed, suggesting the retention or additional formation of early hydration products. BSE-based pore analysis revealed that NS and SF both reduced capillary pore volume; notably, NS3 exhibited the most refined pore structure, characterized by reduced connectivity and a more homogeneous matrix.
Overall, ACC proved effective in enhancing early-age strength and microstructural densification of cement paste, and the combined use of nano-silica and silica fume further amplified these benefits. NS contributed primarily through filling and nucleation effects, facilitating rapid early reactions and pore refinement, whereas SF improved long-term CaCO₃ formation and structural stabilization through its pozzolanic activity. This study provides fundamental insights into the optimal replacement levels of fine silica-based supplementary materials under ACC conditions and offers a mechanistic basis for improving durability and reducing carbon emissions in cementitious materials.
