Ozone (O3) is a representative secondary air pollutant formed through photochemical reactions of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under solar radiation. Although ozone is regulated as a national ambient air quality standard pollutant in Korea, exceedances continue to occur in many regions, highlighting the need to identify the causes of ozone increases and to establish systematic management strategies. Ozone concentrations over the Korean Peninsula are influenced not only by local production from domestic emissions but also by long-range transport of precursors emitted from neighboring countries; therefore, a three-dimensional analysis that includes transboundary contributions is required.
In this study, ozonesonde observations obtained at Anmyeondo during the 2022 ACCLIP (Asian Summer Monsoon Chemical and CLimate Impact Project) campaign were used to calculate vertical ozone fluxes, and transboundary transport and stagnation cases were classified based on flux magnitude and surface wind speed. In addition, the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was applied to elucidate the characteristics of transboundary ozone transport over the Korean Peninsula, and emission reduction scenarios with 20% decreases in foreign NOX and VOCs emissions were simulated to evaluate the impact of foreign precursor emissions on domestic ozone concentrations.
The results showed strong westerly ozone fluxes at altitudes of approximately 1~2 km during transboundary transport cases, clearly indicating inflow across the Yellow Sea. When foreign NOX emissions were reduced, domestic concentrations of PAN, HNO3, and NOX decreased, accompanied by ozone reductions at all altitudes, with maximum contributions of approximately 20~25 ppb near 850 hPa. Under VOCs reduction, domestic radical concentrations decreased, and ozone concentrations near the surface were also reduced. In addition, after an 80% emission reduction, some regions exhibited lower contributions at the 100% reduction stage, indicating nonlinear responses. Regionally, transboundary contributions were relatively high in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Central, and Honam regions, while lower contributions were found in Jeju and Yeongnam. Vertically, the largest contributions appeared near 850 hPa, while relatively small changes occurred in the 500 hPa layer, indicating that transported precursors and intermediates mainly enhance ozone formation in the lower troposphere.
This study integrates ozonesonde vertical observations with numerical modeling to reveal the vertical structure of transboundary ozone transport and to evaluate precursor contributions while considering changes in intermediate species. Furthermore, by presenting altitude and region dependent ozone sensitivities to foreign NOX and VOCs emission reductions, this study provides scientific evidence to support transboundary ozone management strategies in East Asia.
