As one of the most representative musical and dance arts of China’s Western Regions,
Kucha (Qiuci) music and dance constitutes a significant outcome of cultural exchange
between Eastern and Western civilizations along the ancient Silk Road. It not only serves
as concrete evidence of such exchanges but also occupies an important position in the
histories of Chinese dance, Chinese music, and in the context of world dance history. This
study examines the historical evolution, artistic characteristics, and cultural value of Kucha
music and dance. Drawing on textual sources, mural paintings, archaeological artifacts, and
contemporary practices of reconstruction and transmission, this study systematically traces
the origin, development, and decline of Kucha music and dance, while exploring potential
avenues for its contemporary revival.
Geographically situated south of the Tianshan Mountains and north of the Tarim Basin,
the Kingdom of Kucha functioned as a crucial strategic hub on the ancient Silk Road. Its
unique location and cultural environment made it a vital center for the eastward
transmission of Buddhism and a focal point for intercultural interaction between East and
West. The murals preserved in the Kucha grottoes provide abundant visual evidence for
reconstructing the forms and artistic features of Kucha dance, while historical records such
as the Book of Sui (隋书), Tongdian (通典), and Great Tang Records on the Western
Regions (大唐西域记) offer rich textual documentationThis study adopts an interdisciplinary methodology, combining documentary research,
visual analysis, archaeological interpretation, and empirical investigation. Through analysis
of mural paintings and excavated relics from the Kucha grotto complexes, in conjunction
with historical literature, previous scholarship, and contemporary stage practices, the study
illuminates both the historical development and contemporary significance of Kucha music
and dance. Research on Kucha music and dance thus contributes not only to a deeper
understanding of Silk Road cultural exchanges but also to the advancement of dance
studies, musicology, aesthetics, and intercultural research in China and beyond.
