This study quantified the drop size distribution (DSD) and kinetic energy (KE) of gross rainfall and throughfall using an optical disdrometer, along with ground and surface splash cups, to examine how forest type and spatial variability influence the physical properties of throughfall drops. A total of 11 rainfall events were monitored in a coniferous stand (Pinus koraiensis), a broadleaved stand (Quercus mongolica), and an open site within the Research Forest of Kangwon National University. Hourly analyses of raindrop data revealed that the influence of major meteorological variables on raindrop characteristics varied among forest types, indicating that canopy structure and leaf morphology play a role in shaping throughfall DSD. Compared to gross rainfall, throughfall exhibited fewer raindrops but significantly larger median volume diameters (D50). Specifically, D50 values were 4.19±0.76 mm in the Q. mongolica stand and 3.61±0.28 mm in the P. koraiensis stand, versus 1.55±0.32 mm at the open site. The proportion of drops larger than approximately 3.0∼3.5 mm was also greater in throughfall, suggesting that raindrops coalesce and reform into larger drops as they interact with canopy elements such as leaves and branches. KE estimates from both the optical disdrometer and splash cups were consistent with these DSD patterns. Soil erosion measurements showed that unit soil loss per unit rainfall was higher beneath forest canopies than in the open site when the organic layer was absent, whereas the presence of the organic layer substantially reduced soil erosion across all forest types, demonstrating its role in mitigating splash erosion. Spatial comparisons within the P. koraiensis stand revealed considerable variability in throughfall characteristics: D50 was highest at the canopy overlap point (3.91±0.39 mm), followed by the mid-canopy (3.61±0.28 mm) and near-stem points (3.43±0.30 mm). KE derived from the optical disdrometer followed a similar pattern. However, event-based KE estimates from ground splash cups showed a different trend, suggesting that canopy surface characteristics, such as branch structure and drip point formation, influence the kinetic energy of throughfall. Overall, this study provides quantitative evidence that forest type and spatial variability significantly shape the physical characteristics of throughfall, offering insight for improving rainfall erosivity estimation and enhancing soil erosion prediction in forested landscapes.
