인종화된 감정 구조와 이주민의 장소 형성 : 소설 『아메리카나』 서사와 한국 사회 내 아프리카 이주민의 경험을 통하여

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 아프리카 이주민이 감정 규율이 강하게 작동하는 사회적 조건 속에 서도 어떻게 일상을 살아가고, 장소를 만들어 왔는지를 분석한다. 본 연구는 감 정을 이주의 경험을 설명하는 부차적 요소로 다루지 않고, 이주민의 삶이 제도 적·사회적 경계 속에서 어떻게 유지되고 조정되는지를 이해하기 위한 분석의 매개로 활용한다. 이를 위해 치마만다 응고지 아디치에의 소설 『아메리카나』를 분석하여 미국 사회에서 이주민에게 부과되는 감정 법칙과 이에 대한 대응 양상을 도출하고, 이를 한국 사회의 이주 정책 담론, 미디어 및 온라인 공간, 이태원과 노량진 지역에서의 현장 조사(참여 관찰) 결과와 교차 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 한국 사회의 감정 규율은 미국식 인종주의와 달리 법적 지위, 경제적 자본, 국적을 중심으로 작동하며, 이주민을 감정적으로 선별하고 위계화하는 구조를 형성하고 있음이 드러났다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이주민들은 미용실, 잡화 점, 식당과 같은 물리적 공간, 종교와 신앙의 심리적 공간, 그리고 SNS와 온라인 커뮤니티와 같은 디지털 공간을 통해 감정을 조정하고 소속감을 구축하며, 제도적 경계 바깥에서 감정적 장소를 만들어 왔다. 본 연구는 이러한 장소 만들기 과정을 통해 감정 규율이 단순한 통제 장치가 아니라, 이주민의 실천 속에서 교섭되고 전유되는 과정임을 보여준다. 나아가 이 논문은 감정을 중심으로 이주민의 살아감을 조명함으로써, 배제와 위계의 구조 속에서도 지속되는 삶의 방식과 사회적 공존의 가능성을 사유할 수 있는 분석적 토대를 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines how African migrants in South Korea live, negotiate, and make places under socially imposed emotional rules and regimes. Rather than treating emotion as a secondary or individual-level factor, this study approaches emotion as a relational medium through which migrants navigate social boundaries, institutional constraints, and everyday life.
Drawing on an analysis of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah, the study first identifies the emotional regimes imposed on African migrants in the United States and their modes of response. These insights are then juxtaposed with an analysis of Korean migration policy discourse, media and online narratives, and fieldwork based on participant observation conducted in Seoul. Through this comparative and multi-layered approach, the study explores how emotion politics operates differently across national contexts.
The findings show that emotional rules in South Korea are not primarily organized around phenotype-based racism, as in the United States, but around legal status, economic capital, and nationality. Within these conditions, African migrants nonetheless construct affective places by adjusting and negotiating emotions across multiple domains: physical spaces such as salons, corner shops, and restaurants; psychological spaces linked to religion and faith; and digital spaces including social media and online communities. These practices demonstrate that emotional regulation is not only a mechanism of control but also a site of mediation, appropriation, and everyday survival.
In conclusion, this study argues that emotion is not merely an explanatory variable but a crucial lens for understanding how migrants endure, inhabit, and rework social boundaries. By foregrounding migrants’ affective practices and place-making under conditions of regulation and exclusion, the study offers a nuanced contribution to migration studies and provides a theoretical foundation for rethinking emotion, belonging, and coexistence.
