The main purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the process and the perception of the spread of K-pop and Korean Traditional Music in Spain while examining the major factors influencing the differences in people's perceptions of these two types of music. In doing so, the public and private organizations, such as the Korean government or K-Wave club, that disseminate Korean music and host musical events were the main targets of the study. The study focuses on the actions taken by each organization to promote Korean music in Spain. The programs conducted by these groups were categorized by year, host organization, region, and music type, and analyzed for their characteristics. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with two groups: a Korean music audience group and a group of officials from the organizations responsible for Korean cultural events.
According to the study results, the key players in the spread of Korean music in Spain were Korean and Spanish government agencies, private groups, and the Media(Internet). Among these, Media, in other words, the Internet enabled the transnational consumption of K-pop culture beyond the constraints of time and space, and played a decisive role in the spread of K-pop and the formation of its fandom within Spain. As a result, K-pop has been actively spreading not only in large cities but also in smaller cities, and many local private companies were collaborating with K-pop groups. Korean Traditional Music, on the other hand, has been primarily spread via cooperation with the Spanish government and the Korean Cultural Center. Unlike K-pop, most activities were held in Madrid, where the Korean Cultural Center was located. Additionally, rather than maintaining its format, the nature of the music has been evolving from pure traditional forms to collaborations with Spanish music or Western instruments. K-pop audiences formed various perceptions based on their engagement with K-pop. For active audiences, especially women in their 10s and 20s, K-pop was recognized as a multimedia experience combining musical and audiovisual elements. These audiences generally held positive perceptions, associating K-pop with positive images; energetic, containing messages with hope, colorful, powerful, and friendly. However, passive audiences or non-users often criticized K-pop, viewing it as artificial and overly commercial. The primary means of engagement of active K-pop fans was through the Internet rather than the offline events hosted by government agencies or private groups, which had minimal impact on their awareness of K-pop.
In Contrast, the Korean Cultural Center played a significant role in raising awareness of Korean Traditional Music. Most audiences were aged 30 and older, engaging with the music through the Center's programs. Traditional music evoked sentiments of "peace and quiet" and received more positive responses when combined with Spanish music, such as Flamenco. The initial positive reception to these collaborations suggests that expanding such programs could further enhance local acceptance and engagement. Future efforts should focus on offering diverse traditional music experiences and collaborating with Spanish musicians or local music genres to foster closer connections with locals. These initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the recognition and appreciation of K-pop and Korean traditional music in Spain, promoting them collectively as K-music.
