This study explores the English learning experiences of older adult learners attending senior welfare centers, focusing on their learning motivation, satisfaction with English education programs, and experiences related to digital literacy. Rather than conceptualizing English learning solely as the development of linguistic competence, this study approaches it as a learning experience embedded in emotional well-being, social interaction, and everyday life contexts.
A qualitative research design was employed as the primary methodological framework. Questionnaire data were first collected to obtain descriptive information on learners’ motivation types, program satisfaction, and digital literacy-related experiences. These data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and served as supplementary background information. In-depth interviews were then conducted with older learners and social workers to examine how English learning participation, satisfaction, and difficulties were experienced and interpreted in practice. Interview data were analyzed through thematic analysis to capture recurring patterns and experiential meanings.
The findings indicate that older learners’ participation in English learning is largely sustained by intrinsic motivation and emotional satisfaction derived from the learning process itself, while social interaction and practical needs function as secondary motivational factors. Program satisfaction was primarily associated with instructors’ teaching approaches, emotional support, and the stability of face-to-face learning environments. In contrast, digital literacy-related experiences were identified as contextual conditions that shaped access to learning opportunities and influenced learners’ confidence and sense of burden, rather than as measurable skill levels. Learners’ digital experiences were found to range from limited familiarity to minimal exposure, which affected their perceptions of online learning rather than their willingness to learn English itself.
This study contributes to the field of older adult English education by highlighting the importance of understanding learners’ experiences through a qualitative lens. The findings suggest that English education programs for older adults should be designed with careful attention to emotional safety, social engagement, and supportive learning environments, alongside realistic consideration of digital accessibility. These insights may serve as foundational references for the development and operation of English education programs tailored to older learners.
