『바다에 빠진 소녀』에 나타난 글로컬 서사 전략 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 악시 오(Axie Oh)의 YA 소설 『바다에 빠진 소녀(The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea)』를 한국 고전소설 <심청전>의 현대적 리텔링으로 규정 하고, 작품에 구현된 글로컬 서사 전략의 양상을 규명하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 를 위해 본 연구는 토도로프(Tzvetan Todorov)의 서사 문법과 장르 이론을 주 요 분석 틀로 삼아, 한국 고전문학에서 유래한 로컬 문화 요소들이 글로벌 YA 판타지 장르의 규범을 통해 어떠한 방식으로 재구성되고 재의미화되는지를 분 석한다. 원천 서사와 리텔링 서사의 서사 구조, 주제 조직 방식, 세계 구축 전략 을 비교함으로써, 글로컬성이 서사 형식의 차원에서 작동하는 메커니즘을 밝히 고자 한다. 분석 결과, 『바다에 빠진 소녀』는 <심청전>의 플롯을 단순히 재현하는 데 그치지 않고, 특히 희생과 보상이라는 핵심 모티프를 선택적으로 변형하여 정체 성 탐색, 개인적 주체성, 성장 서사라는 현대 YA 장르 규범에 부합하는 서사 요소로 재구성하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. <심청전>이 전근대 한국 사회의 윤리 체계에 기반한 효와 공동체적 가치를 전면에 내세운다면, 악시 오의 소설 은 희생을 외부로부터 강요된 도덕적 행위가 아니라 주체의 의지에 따른 선택 으로 재해석함으로써, 주인공을 수동적인 미덕의 구현자가 아닌 능동적 행위자 로 재위치 시킨다. 이러한 변화는 글로벌 청소년 독자층과의 공명 가능성을 염 두에 둔 구조적·이데올로기적 조정으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 본 연구는 작품 속에서 용왕의 나라로 제시되는 해저 세계의 구축 방식 에 주목한다. 이 공간은 단순한 시련의 상징적 무대가 아니라, 고유한 규칙과 질서를 지닌 완결된 판타지 세계로 기능한다. 이 세계에서 인물들이 자신의 외 형을 스스로 선택할 수 있다는 서사 규칙은 신체 변화, 자아 인식, 정체성 형성 과 같은 청소년기의 핵심 경험을 은유적으로 확장한 장치로 해석된다. 이러한 세계 구축 전략은 독자의 몰입을 강화하는 동시에, 한국 신화적 요소를 보편적 으로 접근 가능한 경험적 틀로 옮기는 기능을 수행한다. 그 결과, 한국 문화적 모티프는 이국적 장식으로 소비되지 않고, 일관된 YA 판타지 체계의 핵심 구 성 요소로 보존된다. 이상의 분석을 통해 본 연구는 『바다에 빠진 소녀』가 한국 고전서사의 자 원을 글로벌 장르 규범에 종속시키거나, 반대로 순수한 로컬 문화 유산으로 고 립시키지 않고, 서사 내부의 구조적 메커니즘을 통해 재구성한 글로컬 서사 재 편의 대표적 사례임을 주장한다. 더 나아가 본 연구는 글로컬화를 산업적·문화 정책적 맥락에 국한해 논의해 온 기존 연구의 한계를 확장하여, 서사 구조와 장 르 문법에 대한 분석이 지니는 이론적·방법론적 유효성을 제시한다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 한국 설화의 글로벌 리텔링, YA 소설 연구, 글로컬 서사 연구에 기 여하며, 글로컬성을 서사 내부에서 구조적으로 분석하는 하나의 분석 모델을 제 안한다.

This study examines The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea (2022), a young adult (YA) fantasy fiction by Axie Oh, as a contemporary retelling of the Korean classical narrative Simcheongjeon, with the aim of identifying the fiction’s glocal narrative strategies. Drawing on Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative grammar and genre theory as its primary analytical framework, the study explores how cultural elements derived from Korean classical literature are restructured through the conventions of the global YA fantasy genre. By comparing the narrative structure, thematic organization, and world-building strategies of the source narrative and its retelling, this research elucidates how glocality operates at the level of narrative form.
The analysis demonstrates that The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea does not simply reproduce the plot of Simcheongjeon, but selectively transforms its core motifs—particularly sacrifice and reward—into narrative elements aligned with contemporary YA genre norms, such as identity exploration, individual agency, and coming-of-age. While Simcheongjeon foregrounds filial piety and communal ethics rooted in premodern Korean society, Axie Oh’s novel reinterprets sacrifice as a conscious and self-directed choice, repositioning the protagonist as an active subject rather than a passive bearer of moral virtue. This shift reflects a structural and ideological adaptation aimed at a global adolescent readership.
Particular attention is given to the construction of the undersea realm known as the Sea God’s kingdom, which functions as a fully realized fantasy world rather than a symbolic space of trial. The narrative rule that individuals may determine their own appearance serves as a metaphor for adolescent concerns with bodily change, self-image, and identity formation. This world-building strategy enhances reader immersion while translating culturally specific mythological elements into universally accessible experiential frameworks, preserving Korean cultural motifs as integral components of a coherent YA fantasy system.
Through this analysis, the study argues that The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea represents a paradigmatic case of glocal narrative reconstruction, in which Korean classical narrative resources are neither subsumed by global genre conventions nor isolated as purely local artifacts. Instead, they are reconfigured through internal narrative mechanisms that mediate between cultural specificity and genre-based universality. By foregrounding narrative structure and genre grammar, this research contributes to scholarship on global retellings of Korean folklore, YA fantasy studies, and cultural translation.
