The last pastry chef Go Yeong Seok Advisor : Prof. An Jeom-ok Department of Creative writing. Graduate School of Gwangju University This study explores the creative reconstruction of traditional folktales into "Newly Written Children's Plays(Dong-geuk)" for contemporary child audiences. While traditional children's plays based on folktales have often focused on simple dramatization and the delivery of moral lessons, this collection of plays comprising-「Jaringobi Who Lost His Memory」, 「The Man Who Entered the Painting」, and 「The Last Pastry Chef」—seeks to expand the genre's possibilities through modern reinterpretations. The research focuses on two primary creative strategies for this "newness": Transformation of Fantastic (Irreal) Elements: Traditional motifs such as goblins(Dokkaebi), magic wands, magical paintings, and memory loss are refashioned as narrative devices with modern significance. For instance, the goblin's wand is reinterpreted not as a tool for acquiring wealth, but as a symbol of community responsibility. Expansion of Meaning through Rewriting: By reconfiguring character relationships and narrative functions, the plays address contemporary themes such as social cognition through observing others, the self-destruction of corrupt power, and communal healing. Specific examples include transforming the "painter" in 「The Man Who Entered the Painting」 from a mere fugitive into a "small hero" who protects the community, and using the afterlife judgment in 「Jaringobi Who Lost His Memory」 to prompt a multidimensional reflection on social ethics rather than a singular moral judgment. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that by utilizing the structural power and symbolic resonance of traditional narratives while integrating modern fantasy elements and themes, children's plays can move beyond simple didacticism. These works provide a space where children can engage with democratic sensibilities, justice, and emotional recovery, establishing a new creative turning point for the genre of children's plays. Keywords: Children’s Play(Dong-geuk), Folktales, Creative Reconstruction, Fantasy Elements, Modern Reinterpretation, Social-Emotional Learning.
