This dissertation particularly explores the Christological doctrine of “hypostatic union”(unio hypostatica) of the "true God" (vere Deus) and the "true man" (vere homo) in the mediatorial person of Jesus Christ, which is regarded as the fundamental criterion of the orthodox Christology of the Chalcedonian Definition (451). Particularly central to this study is the contributions of John Calvin (1509–1564), who articulated the 16th-century Reformed understanding of the hypostatic union, and Francis Turretin (1623–1687), who further refined and systematized this doctrine within the framework of 17th-century Reformed orthodoxy. Both theologians adhere to the patristic tradition rooted in the early ecumenical councils, notably the Chalcedonian Definition, and are influenced by the theological legacy of Augustine of Hippo (354–430), Leo the Great (400–461), and Cyril of Alexandria (376–444). Calvin and Turretin both have significantly impacted subsequent Reformed theologians of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Hodge and Bavinck, who have formulated the core themes of modern Reformed theology against 19th-century’s liberal theology and 20th-century’s neo-orthodox theology. The “hypostatic union”(unio hypostatica) can be explained as the doctrine of the union of Christ’s divine and human natures within a single person(hypostasis or persona or subsistentia), that is, subsisting(subsistere) of the second Person of the Trinity in the incarnation as the one and eternal Subject. For this doctrine had been a great controversial theme from the Early Church via Chalcedon to theologians of the 16th and 17th-century Reformed and Lutheran, it is quite imperative to focus on the person and work of the Christus the Mediator as a core theme of modern Christological foundation. Thus, this study emphasizes the biblical-creedal foundations of the Incarnation and the communication of attributes (communicatio idiomatum) as the basis for establishing a fundamental tenet of Reformed Christology. As we see, according to Calvin and Turretin, the central function of the hypostatic union concerns the incarnate Son of God, who, in His eternal divine nature, assumed human nature in a hypostatic union. Within this union, Christ performs His mediatorial work(opera hypostatica), whereby He, in His perfect obedience to the Father’s will, accomplished atonement and substitutional righteousness through His humiliation and exaltation. These divine and human actions are grounded in the communication of attributes, which is rooted in the hypostatic union. Christ’s suffering and death, according to His human nature, involve complete obedience and suffering, yet because He remains the eternal Son of God in His divine nature, His righteousness possesses infinite and eternal value. Without the doctrine of the hypostatic union, it would be impossible to affirm the actual efficacy of Christ’s vicarious atonement and the infinite worth of His righteousness. Consequently, Calvin, Turretin, and subsequent Reformed theologians affirm that Christ’s mediatorial work of substitution and atonement extends to the entire process of salvation. In this context, the Reformed confessional documents—such as the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Canons of Dort, and the Westminster Confession—emphasize a Christocentric doctrinal focus. They articulate that the one person of Jesus Christ, in His hypostatic union, accomplishes His mediatorial work through the communication of natures, fulfilling the covenantal pattern of “redemptive achievement” and “soteriological application.” This underscores the doctrinal significance of the Chalcedonian confession as expressing the essence of Reformed theology’s understanding of Christ’s mediatorial work—namely, that Christ, in His divine-human person, fully accomplishes the work of salvation and imparts His righteousness through the covenantal economy.
