This study aims to understand the daily lives of young children who experience extended evening childcare at their former childcare center after attending kindergarten. By exploring these experiences from the children's own perspectives, this research examines the culture generated through this process and its underlying meanings. The research questions are as follows:
Research Question 1. What are the lives of young children who experience extended evening childcare at the childcare center from which they graduated?
Research Question 2. What culture do young children generate during their time in extended evening childcare at their former childcare center?
Despite the quantitative expansion of extended evening childcare, research on the experiences and perspectives of participating children remains insufficient. Existing research has predominantly focused on adult-centered topics—such as teachers' and parents' perceptions, satisfaction levels, and operational methods—or on negative emotional experiences like stress. Therefore, this study seeks to reexamine extended evening childcare through a child-centered lens.
The study was conducted at Y Childcare Center in Seoul over ten months, from February to November 2025. Participants included eight children (three boys, five girls aged 3 and 5), two extended evening childcare teachers, and five parents. Data collection was conducted through 96 participant observations (2–4 times per week) and 42 in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using Spradley’s (1980) four-stage ethnographic method: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and thematic analysis.
The main findings of this study are as follows:
First, the children expressed and gradually resolved the tension of kindergarten enrollment within the extended evening childcare space. The familiar environment of their former childcare center provided a sense of security, with teachers serving as an emotional secure base. Furthermore, the travel time between the kindergarten and the childcare center was identified as a meaningful period for psychological transition.
Second, the children generated a new peer and care culture. Frequent relational conflicts in the early stages gradually transformed into cooperative relationships. By naturally referring to one another as“childcare center family,”they formed a strong sense of community and mutual care.
Third, the children meaningfully reconstructed the once-familiar space and the unique atmosphere of the evening, creating their own play culture. They developed a distinct wordplay culture by utilizing the characteristics of nighttime and transformed community spaces into sites for exploration and adventure.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that for children returning to their former childcare center after kindergarten, extended evening childcare is not merely a logistical extension of care but a joyful learning environment. These findings are expected to enhance the educational value of evening childcare and provide foundational data for establishing child-centered operational policies.
