This paper analyzes the intricate structural characteristics of Psalm 119, the most prominent alphabetic acrostic in the Bible. Psalm 119 is a highly stylized work composed of 22 stanzas, each containing eight verses, corresponding to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet (for a total of 176 verses). Within this framework, the psalmist employs eight key synonyms for the Torah: תּוֹרָה(tôrāh), עֵדוּת(ʿēdût), פִּקּוּדִים(piqqûdîm), חֹק(ḥōq), מִצְוָה(miṣwāh), מִשְׁפָּט(mišpāṭ), דָּבָר(dāḇār), and אִמְרָה(ʾimrāh).
The eight Torah synonyms employed in Psalm 119 are not evenly distributed across each strophe. Moreover, their frequency of usage varies significantly, ranging from a minimum of 19 to a maximum of 25 occurrences. This study demonstrates that such irregularity is neither the result of mere coincidence nor an indication of compositional immaturity. Rather, it is a literary device meticulously devised by the poet to embody the theological theme of ‘Omission and Inclusion.’
This intentional design is clearly evident from the very first strophe, Aleph. Here, the poet intentionally excludes ‘dabar’ (דָּבָר) and ‘imrah’ (אִמְרָה), an omission that operates as a fundamental pattern permeating the entire psalm. These two terms make their first appearance only in the second strophe, Beth, and subsequently oscillate between disappearance and re-emergence in alignment with the deepening context of suffering and restoration. This thematic flow serves as a decisive driving force that propels the theological message of the entire psalm.
To substantiate this core argument, this dissertation closely analyzes the various poetic mechanisms within Psalm 119. Key subjects of analysis include synonymous and antithetic parallelism, expansive parallelism, pivot structures, inclusio, wordplay, and imagery and metaphor. In particular, drawing upon Randal E. Pelton’s ‘Speech Act Theory,’ this study analyzes the imperative verbs concentrated in the latter half (Nun-Pe, strophes 14-17), where the poet’s suffering reaches its zenith. This analysis aims to elucidate how these verbs transcend mere supplication to function as ‘Performative Utterances’ that encapsulate the poet’s existential desperation and covenantal demands within the genre of ‘Torah-Prayer.’ Furthermore, by applying Al-Jaza'iri’s concept of ‘intentional shift,’ this study demonstrates that the micro-level variations in key synonym pairs are not indicative of psychological chaos, but are rather sophisticated and intentional poetic devices conveying a theological message that craves judgment upon the wicked.
In conclusion, the poet of Psalm 119 creatively synthesizes two contrasting elements: the ‘strict regularity of the alphabetic acrostic form’ and the ‘intentional irregularity in the usage of Torah synonyms.’ The pattern of ‘Absence and Persistence’—wherein ‘dabar’ and ‘imrah’ are intentionally withheld in the first strophe (Aleph) and then strategically deployed in alignment with the themes of suffering and restoration—serves as definitive proof of this creative synthesis. Through this sophisticated mechanism, the poet has crafted a multi-layered literary work that profoundly embodies the theological message of fierce faith clinging to the Word amidst suffering, and the salvation that ensues.
