‘Praise and Worship,’ which has established itself as a universal form of worship in the Korean church today, has been rapidly accepted without significant theological verification under the pretext of church growth and cultural relevance since the late 1980s. This has led to a discrepancy of ‘theology separate from worship,’ where the Reformed theology proclaimed from the pulpit is divorced from the liturgical practices of the actual worship field. Accordingly, this study theologically examines ‘Praise and Worship’ in the Korean church in light of the principles of historic Reformed worship and seeks concrete measures to renew it in a Reformed way.
To develop the study, the Reformer’s worship philosophies, including Calvin, and the historical transition process were first examined to designate the four core characteristics of Reformed worship: ‘God-centeredness,’ ‘Scripture-centeredness,’ ‘Congregation-centeredness,’ and ‘Simplicity.’ In addition, the origins of ‘Praise and Worship’ were discussed using ‘A Tale of Two Rivers and Their Confluence’ presented by Lester Ruth and Lim Swee Hong. This analysis confirmed that ‘Praise and Worship’ was formed by the convergence of the flow of ‘Contemporary Worship’ pursuing cultural relevance and the flow of ‘Pentecostal-Charismatic Worship’ emphasizing the experience of God's presence through praise, and traced the historical process of its introduction and settlement in the Korean church.
Based on this historical and theological understanding, ‘Praise and Worship’ was evaluated according to the four core characteristics of Reformed worship. ‘Praise and Worship’ has made a positive contribution in that it directly portrays the attributes of God, induces wholehearted participation of the congregation, and conveys the Gospel simply and clearly in modern language. However, at the same time, with the ‘Theology of Presence’ being based on experientialism, it carries the risk of mistaking subjective emotions for God's presence or distorting the essential meaning of Scripture by leaning more towards musical sentiment than the Word. Also, concerns were revealed regarding the change of worship into a performance, the spectatorialization of the congregation due to specialized praise teams, and the fostering of a consumerist attitude based on pragmatism.
Therefore, this study rejects both the unconditional opposition and mechanical acceptance of ‘Praise and Worship’ and suggests the following proposal in the direction of renewing its meaning and function. First, in the structure of worship, ‘God-centeredness’ must be restored by clearly implementing the ‘Dialogic Principle,’ which is not the elevation of human subjective emotions but God's sovereign calling and the response of His covenant people. Second, the praise leader, as a ‘pastoral musician,’ should communicate closely with the preacher and strengthen the authority of the Word by constructing a song set that reflects the biblical meta-narrative. Third, the praise team should serve as ‘servant leaders,’ not performers, helping the church to sing congregational songs in which they actively participate, and ensuring a balance between vertical worship and horizontal edification. Finally, true ‘Simplicity’ must be pursued, focusing on revealing the essence of the Gospel rather than pragmatic effects. Through these efforts, the Korean church will be able to move towards a healthier worship that embodies the identity of Reformed theology while keeping the dynamics of ‘Praise and Worship’ alive.
