The purpose of this study is to systematize the concept and procedures of action verbs from both theoretical and practical perspectives and to concretize ways of using them by applying them to the rehearsal and performance process of the play Bent. An actor analyzes the given circumstances and the character on the basis of the script to prepare for performance, builds the character’s inner life during rehearsal, and realizes the character’s objectives on stage through speech and physical action. While performing “Max” in Bent across four productions and about seventy performances over seven years, the researcher experienced emotional depletion and variability and thus felt the need for greater refinement and expansion of action. Within the cycle of remounts, the researcher turned attention to action verbs as a mediator that converts an actor’s objective into executable behavior. The concept of action verbs is meaningful in that it externalizes an actor’s inner motivation into action and enables the active pursuit of objectives through interaction with a partner.
Methodologically, a theoretical study that proceduralized the use of action verbs was combined with a practice-based study applying those procedures to the production process of Bent. The theoretical component organized the concept of action verbs against the background of Stanislavski’s Method of Physical Actions and examined the concepts, classifications, and application procedures proposed by William Ball and Marina Caldarone & Maggie Lloyd-Williams. Synthesizing their frameworks, the study established a selection procedure—“character goal (want) → expected partner response (effect on the other) → verbification”—and an application procedure—“verb inscription → design and performance of physical actions → substitution and expansion.” These procedures were applied to Act 1, Scene 4 and Act 2, Scene 3 of Bent. Each scene was first unitized around character objectives and axes of conflict. Four units that yielded analytically meaningful results were then chosen; for each, an action verb was inscribed before the line, a corresponding physical action was designed and performed, and the verb was substituted or expanded in response to the partner’s reaction and shifts in the scene. The selection and design/performance of action verbs were recorded in a tabular format.
The results show that effective action verbs converge on seven conditions: they embody desire; are expressed as verbs rather than nouns or adjectives; are transitive and partner-oriented; can affect the partner; are concretizable as physical action; are goal-directed; and are specific and dynamic. On this basis, it was possible to construct the selection procedure (“goal → expected response → verbification”) and the application procedure (“inscription → design/performance of physical actions → substitution/expansion”), and to derive the following outcomes when these were inserted into actual performance work. First, coupling lines with physical action organically improved interaction and the transmission of objectives. Second, even under the same objective, verb substitution or expansion brought corresponding changes in physical action and increased the likelihood of achieving the objective. Third, micro-adjustments of meaning and graded expected responses enabled precise control of intensity, direction, and modality, while concretely widening the actor’s range of choices to secure expressive diversity. Fourth, table-based logging increased reproducibility, helping to maintain consistency and vitality across repeated performances.
This study proposed theoretical conditions for action verbs, constructed a selection–application procedure, and applied it to rehearsal and performance. In doing so, it supplements the limitations of intuition-driven verb choice and emotion-centered methods and offers a practical way to connect inner motivation to outward behavior. It is hoped that future comparative studies across theories and genres will diversify the application of action verbs.
