This study aims to empirically examine the structural relationship between self-estee
m and exercise persistence intention among body profile participants by applying the E
xtended Theory of Planned Behavior (E-TPB). Recognizing the limitations of the origin
al Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in predicting exercise behavior, this study constr
ucts a more comprehensive theoretical framework by adding the “body image” variable
to the traditional TPB model, which comprises attitude, subjective norm, and perceived
    behavioral control.
The study participants were body profile experience individuals in Beijing, Shanghai,
and Guangzhou, China, and an online survey was conducted. A total of 500 questionnai
res were distributed, and 412 were retrieved, resulting in an effective response rate of 8
2.4%. The research instruments measured TPB constructs, body image, participation mo
tivation, self-esteem, and exercise persistence intention using a 5-point Likert scale. The
collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 28.0, including descriptive sta
tistics, reliability and validity tests, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory fact
or analysis (CFA), path analysis, and mediation effect verification.
The results are as follows. First, the overall fit of the extended TPB model was foun
    d to be good (χ²/df = 1.59, CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.04), and the reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.882–0.926) and convergent/discriminant validity (AVE = 0.417–0.716) of
    each measurement tool were also confirmed to be at acceptable levels. Second, the subfactors of TPB—attitude (β = 0.152, p < 0.01), subjective norm (β = 0.199, p < 0.00
    1), and perceived behavioral control (β = 0.206, p < 0.001)—all exerted a significant po
    sitive (+) effect on participation motivation, and body image (β = 0.222, p < 0.001) al
so significantly predicted participation motivation. Third, participation motivation (β =
    0.274, p < 0.001) and body image (β = 0.123, p < 0.01) had a significant positive (+)
    effect on self-esteem, while body image (β = 0.232, p < 0.001) and self-esteem (β =
0.304, p < 0.001) positively influenced exercise persistence intention. In contrast, attitude
demonstrated a limited direct effect on self-esteem, whereas subjective norm and percei
ved behavioral control did not exert significant direct effects on self-esteem. Furthermor
e, the direct paths from attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control to e
xercise persistence intention were not statistically significant.
Regarding hypothesis testing, attitude (H1-1), subjective norm (H1-2), perceived beh
avioral control (H1-3), and body image (H1-4) were all supported, as they exerted sig
nificant positive effects on participation motivation. Furthermore, participation motivation
(H4) and body image (H2-4) significantly influenced self-esteem, while body image (H
3-4) and self-esteem (H5) significantly affected exercise persistence intention. Conversel
y, the hypotheses regarding the direct effects of attitude, subjective norm, and perceive
d behavioral control on self-esteem and exercise persistence intention were rejected. The
squared multiple correlations (SMC) for each endogenous variable were 33% for particip
ation motivation, 26% for self-esteem, and 27% for exercise persistence intention, confir
ming that the model’s explanatory power is generally at an appropriate level.
The mediation effect analysis revealed that participation motivation and self-esteem h
ad significant indirect effects in some paths, and the bootstrapping-based BC 95% confi
dence interval analysis also verified that most indirect effects fell within statistically sig
nificant ranges. Notably, body image was confirmed to constitute a central mediating m
echanism linking participation motivation, self-esteem, and exercise persistence intention
    within the extended TPB framework.
In conclusion, the extended TPB incorporating body image is a theoretical framework that can more multidimensionally explain the psychological mechanisms and exercise per
sistence intention of body profile participants. Body image functions as a core variable c
onnecting body perception and exercise behavior, while self-esteem acts as a critical psy
chological mediating factor that converts participation motivation into long-term exercise
    behavior.
Overall, this study contributes to the theoretical extension of the TPB by integrating
body image as a key psychological construct and offers practical implications for
understanding exercise behavior and body image formation within the context of body
    profile experiences.
