In contemporary digital environments, individual investors rarely rely on a single source when searching for stock-related information. Instead, they navigate across multiple platforms-including brokerage applications, portals, online communities, and video services-while repeatedly verifying, comparing, and switching between information sources. As user-generated financial content continues to proliferate, investors face increasing cognitive and interpretive burdens in evaluating the credibility and relevance of information. Despite this complexity, prior research on information-seeking behavior has primarily relied on surveys or log-based metrics to quantify search frequency, duration, or transition rates, offering limited insight into how information-seeking unfolds as a temporally organized process.
This study aims to examine how stock information seeking is structurally organized over time by focusing on the process through which users connect, repeat, and transition between information sources during exploration. Rather than treating information seeking as a collection of isolated actions or outcomes, this research conceptualizes it as a sequential and evolving process with discernible patterns of development. To this end, screen-recorded data of mobile stock information seeking were collected and analyzed to capture users' actual exploratory behavior prior to decision-making.
The recorded videos were manually segmented into meaningful behavioral units based on changes in search intention, information use, or interaction context. Each unit was documented as a log entry containing temporal attributes, platform type, information representation, and descriptive behavioral details. Based on these logs, recurrent behavioral patterns were identified and categorized into five types of exploration activities using text-based clustering methods. To examine strategic differences across users, a set of exploration strategy indicators was constructed, including measures of time allocation, platform diversity, transition frequency, and repetition patterns. Hierarchical clustering was then applied to these indicators to identify user groups exhibiting similar exploration structures.
The analysis revealed three distinct exploration strategy types. The first type, labeled Snack-oriented, was characterized by short exploration segments and frequent transitions across platforms, reflecting a strategy focused on rapidly sampling informational cues. The second type, Preference-repetitive, showed limited platform use and repeated engagement with familiar information types, suggesting a strategy centered on reinforcing understanding within a narrow interpretive frame. The third type, Fact-oriented, demonstrated longer engagement with structured and formal information, indicating a strategy aimed at establishing judgment criteria before selectively expanding exploration.
To further interpret these patterns, this study employed tracking map visualizations that aligned exploration logs along a temporal axis. These visualizations made it possible to observe how exploration activities were sequenced, where repetitions accumulated, and how transitions shaped the overall flow of information seeking. The results showed that differences in exploration strategies were not merely quantitative but structural, reflecting distinct ways of organizing information-seeking processes over time.
By focusing on the procedural structure of exploration rather than final choices or self-reported strategies, this study contributes a process-oriented perspective to research on high-involvement information seeking. The findings suggest that stock information seeking can be understood as a set of recurring structural patterns shaped by how users organize exploration in situ, offering a foundation for future research on adaptive information environments and user-centered financial information design.
