The advancement of digital technology in the 21st century is fundamentally reshaping the concept of exhibition space and its methods. Since the mid-2010s, the global proliferation of digital media art exhibitions has brought about significant changes in the exhibition landscape. Fueled by early technological advancements, media art emerged in improvisational and experimental forms, focusing on fun and sensory experiences. Global digital artists created immersive spaces utilizing light, sound, and interactivity, which quickly gained popularity through commercial exhibitions and art festivals. However, it's noteworthy that the trend in contemporary exhibitions isn't simply a media art boom. This digital convergence technology is now expanding into the realm of artifact exhibitions in traditional museums. As major museums at home and abroad adopt digital immersive theaters, and domestic history and cultural exhibition halls actively utilize projection mapping, VR, and interactive media, the two previously separate fields of "artifact-centered traditional exhibitions" and "digital media art exhibitions" are converging under the umbrella of "digital convergence exhibitions." Beyond simply introducing technology, this raises fundamental questions about how museums should display their artifact content and the essence of exhibitions. It is shaping a new paradigm of digital convergence exhibitions, encompassing a diverse spectrum from traditional exhibitions to purely digital ones.
This study begins with the recognition that we have reached a point where we can analyze the accumulated examples of digital convergence exhibitions over the past decade. As the new exhibition paradigm created by media art expands from traditional museum artifact content displays to indoor and outdoor media art, it is now necessary to systematically examine how digital convergence is implemented differently in these diverse areas, what characteristics are particularly prominent, what scope of technological application is permissible, and what commonalities can be unified under the concept of "digital convergence exhibition." To answer these questions, this study moves beyond the traditional technology-centric approach and explores how the purpose and context of an exhibition influence the implementation of digital convergence, thereby providing an integrated perspective on the interactions between technology, space, and people.
This study employed a qualitative, multiple-case study method combining literature review and field observation. Traditional museums and purely digital exhibitions were defined as opposite ends of a spectrum, and various representative domestic and international examples falling between the two were analyzed. Core characteristics of digital convergence exhibitions, including immersion, interactivity, adaptability, expandability, and multisensory characteristics, were defined as the analysis criteria, and each case was compared and analyzed.
The intensity of these characteristics and the scope of technological utilization in digital convergence exhibitions differ significantly depending on the exhibition's purpose and context. In traditional museums, artifacts and historical narratives are central, with digital technology serving as a supplementary means of remediating them. While expandability (artifacts + digital layers) and multisensory aspects are emphasized in this type, interactivity is limited by the constraints of educational publicness. The scope of technological utilization is permitted within the purpose of artifact interpretation and knowledge transfer. In contrast, purely digital exhibitions, the digital medium itself becomes the essence of the exhibition, without physical artifacts, maximizing immersion, interactivity, and adaptability. There are virtually no restrictions on technological utilization, and artistic experimentation is freely attempted. However, educational narratives are relatively weak. Examples in the middle ground combine elements from both extremes in varying proportions, emphasizing specific characteristics based on their distinct purposes, such as commercial, tourist, and technological experimentation. Despite these differences, all examples share a common exhibition characteristic structure. The fundamental tools of digital technology are utilized across all types, and the fundamental goal of transforming visitors from passive observers to active participants is shared. However, the priorities of each type's characteristics and the scope of permissible technological use differ depending on the exhibition's purpose and context.
In conclusion, digital convergence exhibitions should not be defined by a specific technology or format, but rather as a conceptual spectrum that varies in multilayered variations based on the combination and emphasis of exhibition characteristics. There is no clear boundary between exhibition types, ranging from traditional museum-style to purely digital, but rather a gradual continuum. Each example, while positioned at a specific point on the spectrum, can be described in a common language. This study presents an analytical framework that systematically examines how media art has transformed the exhibition paradigm, how trends in the exhibition of artifacts and content in traditional museums are evolving, what characteristics are prominent in each location, and the scope of acceptable technological use. This provides a theoretical foundation for academic research on digital convergence exhibitions, and offers practical guidance for future spatial planning and operational strategies for museums and exhibition institutions.
