This study compares the Korean film Haeundae (2009) and the Chinese film Aftershock (2010) to clarify the narrative function and cultural meanings of “self-sacrifice” in disaster cinema. Focusing on pivotal sequences, it extracts the conditions under which sacrifice occurs and its representational modes, and analyzes how meaning is assigned across state, social, and family layers.
The corpus consists of the theatrical releases. The method combines a review of prior scholarship with close reading. Scene coding targets turning points, climaxes, and aftermaths, applying shared observational indicators to ensure comparability.
The analytical framework comprises four dimensions: (1) Motivation; (2) Narrative Space; (3) Screen Rhetoric; (4) Memorialization. This framework systematizes commonalities and differences between the two texts.
Findings indicate that the Korean text foregrounds outward, visible mobilization anchored in public institutions and professional ethics, often staging collective relief and visible heroization in open public spaces.
By contrast, the Chinese text centers family, memory, and atonement, emphasizing private spaces and everyday traces of mourning. Yet in both films, sacrifice is frequently triggered by kinship or role responsibility, and climactic moral dilemmas and risk redistribution function as key narrative devices.
Limitations include a two-film sample, potential subjectivity in coding and judgment, and the risk of overgeneralization from dichotomous dimensions; counterexamples remain, such as kinship-based sacrifice in Haeundae and representations of state rescue in Aftershock.
Nevertheless, the study operationalizes sacrifice through a “motivation–space–rhetoric–memorialization” matrix and offers practical implications for creation: avoiding excessive heroization and emotional overdrive while designing multi-layered memorialization. Future research should expand the corpus and incorporate quantitative or mixed methods.
