This study is based on the theoretical framework of fractal geometry and examines how its structural principles can be transformed into visible expressive forms within contemporary dance creation. Focusing on the original dance work Alienation, the study analyzes how fractal thinking generates expressive logic and dynamic order through the interaction of body movement, space, music, and video. A key feature of this research is the direct application of the three essential characteristics of fractal geometry—self-similarity, chaos and order coexistence, and iteration—to dance creation, demonstrating that fractal logic moves beyond conceptual description and functions as a practical foundation for generating choreographic structure.
This study examines how the core concepts of fractal geometry can be applied to dance creation. To establish a theoretical foundation, prior research was reviewed to identify the structural implications of fractal geometry within various artistic domains. Based on this analysis, three key characteristics applicable to choreographic practice were derived. These characteristics were then systematically integrated into the creation of the work Alienation , informing its movement vocabulary, scene development, and musical structuring. Finally, an analytical review of the completed work was conducted to verify how these fractal characteristics were embodied and materialized throughout the choreographic process.
The results indicate that in Alienation, self-similarity appears as repeated movements and scenes that generate new meanings depending on contextual changes, forming a structural relationship in which “the part reflects the whole.” Chaos and order coexistence is demonstrated through movements that are not fully synchronized yet achieve balance within the overall flow. Repetition (iteration) emerges through movements, scenes, and music that recur multiple times while producing variation and expansion, gradually deepening the emotional and thematic structure of the work over time. Together, these three fractal characteristics function as the key generative principles underlying the structural logic of the piece.
This study confirms, through a complete creative process, that fractal geometry can be applied not merely as a theoretical explanation but as a structural basis and organizational method in dance creation. The work Alienation demonstrates that fractal thinking offers new perspectives for structuring movement, spatial design, and rhythmic development, enabling the work to maintain overall unity while forming complex dynamic structures. Future research may further explore the potential of applying fractal geometry to dance creation by integrating digital technology, interactive media, and AI-based artistic methods.
