Polyaniline(PANi) represents one of the most promising π-conjugated conductive polymers owing to its exceptional properties, including enhanced electrical conductivity, outstanding environmental stability, facile doping capability, tunable conductivity, and a broad spectrum of color variations associated with different oxidation states. Notably, PANi exhibits a unique ability to respond to environmental and external stimuli in a dynamic and reversible manner, a characteristic that has attracted considerable research interest in recent years. In particular, PANi-based electrochemical sensors have attracted considerable attention as highly promising materials for gas detection due to their dynamic resistance modulation upon exposure to hazardous gases. Through chemical doping, charge carriers are generated and mobilized within the π-conjugated polymer backbone, thereby imparting electrical conductivity. When exposed to specific gas molecules, the resistance of the doped PANi sensor is known to vary in direct proportion to the concentration of the adsorbed gas, enabling precise and reliable sensing performance.
In this study, we addressed the performance instability issues commonly encountered in conventional PANi-based gas sensors under varying temperature, humidity, and repeated cycling conditions. To overcome these limitations and enhance sensor reliability, novel P(ANi-co-ASNi) copolymer nanoparticles doped with camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) were designed and synthesized. The resulting nanoparticles exhibited a spherical morphology with an average diameter of approximately 260 nm and were characterized by a distinctive core–shell architecture. It is characterized by a porous thin-film CSA shell with an uneven distribution of fine particulate domains across the outer surface of the positively charged spherical P(ANi-co-ASNi) particle core. The inner core consisted of copolymer nanoparticles, while the outer shell was formed by hydrophobic CSA molecules acting as dopants. This structural configuration was deliberately engineered to provide stable conductive properties and improved environmental robustness, thereby ensuring reliable sensing performance. This unique heterogeneous shell architecture was found to facilitate stable charge transport across the core–shell interface, enhance resistance to ambient humidity, and promote efficient interactions with organic gas molecules. Consequently, the CSA-doped P(ANi-co-ASNi) sensor demonstrated the ability to reliably detect low concentrations of acetone (1–5 ppm) and water vapor (1–28% RH) under ambient conditions. Moreover, the sensor exhibited excellent stability across diverse temperature, humidity, and repeated operational cycles, thereby outperforming conventional pristine PANi-based sensors in overall performance. Structural characterization of the sensing material was carried out using SEM, TEM, EDS, UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. In particular, UV/Vis/NIR and IR analyses were employed to elucidate the interaction mechanism between the PANi-based sensor and acetone gas. The findings of this study highlight the potential of the CSA-doped P(ANi-co-ASNi) NPs sensor not only for detecting various gaseous species and humidity present in ambient air but also for selectively sensing specific biomarkers such as acetone in human breath. These results suggest new opportunities for the development of reliable gas sensors and bio-sensing platforms with enhanced selectivity and stability.
