Drawing on the theoretical framework of Emotion Science, this thesis conducts
an in-depth investigation into the cultural expressions embodied in Tibetan
clothing. It argues that traditional Tibetan attire transcends its external symbolic
functions and serves as a crucial medium linking bodily experience with
emotional identification. The emotional responses generated through the act of
wearing such clothing profoundly shape the internalization of cultural meanings
and the formation of personal and collective identities.
Grounded in emotional theories from both Eastern and Western philosophy—
particularly Spinoza’s Ethics and Toegye Yi Hwang’s Ten Diagrams on Sage
Learning—this study systematically analyzes the cultural and affective
connotations inherent in Tibetan attire. By applying Spinoza’s concept of “bodily
modifications” and Toegye’s idea of seongbal wijeong (性發爲情), it demonstrates
that dressing is not a mere physical activity but a necessary emotional practice
in which the body, mind, and culture interact dynamically.
The thesis further explores the challenges and adaptations Tibetan clothing
faces in the contexts of modernization and globalization. It examines issues such
as the transmission of traditional craftsmanship, contemporary reinterpretations,
intergenerational differences in emotional perception, and cross-cultural
communication. Through an analysis of innovative integrations of emotional
elements in modern design and case studies of international dissemination, the
research highlights the significance and potential of Tibetan clothing as a
sustainable form of cultural expression.
This study concludes that Tibetan attire not only sustains cultural identity but
also functions as a medium for emotional communication and self-understanding
in contemporary society. It also underscores the methodological value of
incorporating Emotion Science into the study of ethnic clothing from an
interdisciplinary perspective.
