This study aims to construct a coherent research framework centered on Kunning Palace (坤宁宫), the core spatial domain of the Qing-dynasty empress, following a systematic trajectory of historical examination → spatial structural analysis → iconological comparative analysis → transformation into contemporary women’s spatial design. The five chapters of this thesis each serve independent analytical functions while remaining closely interconnected, forming a continuous chain through which the symbolic system of traditional palace women’s spaces is extended into contemporary women-centered cultural content design.
Chapter 1 establishes the research background and problem statement. It clarifies the necessity of this study by addressing the expanding influence of female consumers in today’s cultural industries, the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional culture alongside the rise of the Guochao (national-trend) movement, and the current state and limitations of research on palace women’s spaces. In particular, contemporary women actively appropriate historical motifs, traditional color systems, and symbolic spatial imagery as means of expressing identity and emotional sensibility. These sociocultural shifts indicate the potential for transforming the colors, motifs, and symbolic systems of traditional imperial women’s spaces into new cultural content resources. However, previous studies of Kunning Palace have largely focused on architectural history, ritual history, or ancillary narratives, while systematic research on the symbolic system of femininity in the empress’s space, grounded in visual culture and iconological analysis, remains insufficient. In response, this chapter defines the research objectives, scope, and methodologies—including literature review, iconological analysis, spatial-anthropological approaches, symbolic system analysis, and design methodology—and organizes primary materials such as Qing Imperial Household Department archives, court ritual manuals, architectural survey drawings, and field documentation, thereby establishing the academic foundation of the study.
Chapter 2 conducts a focused examination of Kunning Palace itself. This chapter analyzes the historical transformation of Kunning Palace from the residence of the Ming-dynasty empress into a symbolic space in the Qing dynasty that accommodated the dual functions of ritual sacrifice and imperial marriage ceremonies. It then examines the palace’s plan and spatial functions, including the ritual significance of the central main hall, the functional differentiation of the eastern and western side chambers, the arrangement of ritual implements used in Manchu shamanistic practices—such as spirit tablets, ritual knives, sacred palanquins, and effigies—and the procedures of the Hejin (合卺) rite in imperial weddings. Decorative elements associated with marriage rituals, including white porcelain ornaments, Double Happiness (双喜) motifs, dragon-phoenix bridal sedan chairs, and Baizi (百子) motifs, are analyzed in depth. The chapter further explores the wan (卍)-shaped heated kang structure symbolic of Manchu tradition, circulation routes for rituals and weddings, and the sacralization of spatial organization. Through a detailed examination of the integrated relationship among space, ritual, symbolism, color, and ornamentation, this chapter establishes an empirical foundation for subsequent iconological comparison and demonstrates that Kunning Palace is not merely an architectural entity, but a complex symbolic system embodying empressly authority, prosperity and fertility, marital sanctity, and the origin of life.
Chapter 3 constitutes the core analytical stage of the study, applying Erwin Panofsky’s three-level iconological framework to a comparative analysis of Kunning Palace (the empress’s space) and Yangxin Hall and Qianqing Palace (the emperor’s spaces). First, at the level of pre-iconographical description, the chapter compares the dominant color systems, architectural components, and formal characteristics of motifs in the two spatial types. The emperor’s spaces employ authoritative color schemes centered on blue, black, and gold, featuring five-clawed dragon motifs, strong linear compositions, and strict axial symmetry. In contrast, the empress’s space adopts a warmer and more auspicious palette dominated by red, gold, and white, with recurring motifs related to life, abundance, marriage, and femininity, such as phoenix motifs, Fanzhihua (繁枝花) patterns, Baizi motifs, and Double Happiness symbols. Second, at the iconographical analysis level, the symbolic meanings of these colors and motifs are interpreted: dragon motifs in imperial spaces signify the Mandate of Heaven, state power, and yang energy, whereas phoenix motifs in the empress’s space symbolize yin energy, moral virtue, harmony, and royal dignity; Fanzhihua patterns represent feminine vitality and prosperity; Baizi motifs denote fertility and lineage continuity; Double Happiness motifs embody the sanctity of marriage; and red-gold color schemes signify joy, auspiciousness, and blessings of life. Third, at the iconological interpretation level, the chapter synthesizes these findings to compare gendered power structures, ritual hierarchies, women’s symbolic roles, and the spiritual dimensions of space, demonstrating that the empress’s space constitutes an independent visual-cultural and ritual system distinct from that of the emperor. Through this process, the study identifies the core symbolic elements of the empress’s space—colors, motifs, and decorative structures—that are applicable to contemporary women’s spatial design.
Chapter 4 translates the iconological findings into practical design strategies aimed at refining and elevating the quality of contemporary women’s personal spaces. Rather than equating the symbolic system of traditional palace women’s spaces with specific identities or roles, this chapter reinterprets these symbols from the perspective of enhancing the qualitative and emotional status of spaces owned and used by individuals. By applying the visual order and symbolic structure inherent in the empress’s space to modern women’s everyday environments, the chapter establishes “the refinement of one’s personal space” as its central concept, enabling users to perceive their spaces as more composed, stable, and dignified environments.
First, the chapter proposes methods for the contemporary reconstruction of traditional motifs. Core empress-related motifs—such as phoenix motifs, Fanzhihua patterns, and Baizi motifs—are transformed into visual languages suitable for modern spaces through abstraction, linearization, simplification, planar segmentation, repetition, and recombination. This process does not seek to preserve motifs as static historical representations, but rather to redefine them as formative elements that generate spatial order and visual rhythm in contemporary contexts.
Second, the chapter presents application strategies by spatial component. At entrances, three-dimensional door designs incorporating Fanzhihua patterns enhance the symbolic significance of spatial entry; wall surfaces employ low-relief soft panels to create visual depth while providing acoustic absorption; additional elements include bud-shaped volumetric structures for hanging garments, semi-transparent layered lighting devices, and partitions that utilize linear phoenix forms as structural frameworks. Through these strategies, traditional motifs function not as surface decoration, but as structural devices that enhance the quality of spatial experience.
Third, the integration of materials, lighting, and emotional factors is used to regulate the overall refinement of space. Traditional motifs are combined with functional elements such as acoustic panels, light-permeable lighting fixtures, and spatial partitions, allowing them to satisfy practical requirements while retaining symbolic meaning. As a result, contemporary women’s personal spaces are reconstituted not merely as “decorated” environments, but as refined living spaces that provide psychological stability and aesthetic satisfaction.
Ultimately, the significance of Chapter 4 lies in its reinterpretation of the symbolic system of the empress’s space not as a direct projection of personal identity, but as an aesthetic framework for enhancing the quality of modern personal environments. This approach extends the contemporary application of traditional motifs beyond emotional consumption, positioning them as design strategies that deepen spatial value and user experience.
In conclusion, this study establishes a visual symbolic system through iconological analysis based on the historical resource of traditional palace women’s spaces and translates it into contemporary design language, presenting a coherent research trajectory of “tradition → analysis → comparison → design → expansion.” Within the broader context of the modern reinterpretation of traditional culture, this research offers both an academic and practical model that proposes new directions for women-centered design.
