To meet the dual requirements of green low-carbon development and indoor health, this study proposes a development approach based on a coconut fiber–low-formaldehyde adhesive–functional additive system. Through this system, it aims to address issues such as the high resource consumption, VOC emissions, and energy intensity associated with conventional wood-based boards, thereby providing a feasible and sustainable building board solution.
Starting from the perspectives of materials, processes, standards, and design methods, the structural characteristics, modification techniques, and theoretical basis of coconut fiber were systematically organized. By integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the concept of modularization, a more comprehensive evaluation and design framework for coconut fiber was established.
In terms of materials and processes, coconut fiber was used as the substrate, a urea–starch composite adhesive was selected as the binder, and expanded graphite halogen-free flame retardant was introduced. After undergoing pretreatment, layer-by-layer lamination, cold press forming, and room-temperature curing, samples were fabricated and tested for performance, including MOR/MOE, nail-holding resistance, thickness swelling ratio, LOI, and UL-94 rating.
The results showed that the samples exhibited an MOR of approximately 7–9 MPa and nail-holding resistance around 300 N, making them suitable for non-structural indoor applications. All samples achieved the UL-94 V-0 flame-retardant rating and had an LOI well above 25%. In addition, the material demonstrated excellent environmental compatibility and process feasibility.
Building upon this foundation, a five-dimensional user acceptance framework—comprising functional cognition, material trust, aesthetic preference, installation convenience, and purchase intention—was constructed to account for both user and market perspectives. Through semi-structured interviews (N=10), key user requirements such as low VOC and formaldehyde-free materials, detachability, standardization, and cost-effectiveness were identified.
Based on these findings, a design philosophy emphasizing “modularity, replaceability, low maintenance, and recyclability” was proposed, leading to the concept of a dry interior construction system characterized by customized joints, standardized modules, and detachable components. This approach enables the disassembly, replacement, and reuse of products, thereby improving user convenience and maintenance efficiency.
The study concludes that the integrated material–process–design pathway aligns well with carbon peak/carbon neutrality goals and the standards for green and healthy building materials, offering high potential for broader application.
Limitations and Outlook: Further optimization is needed in long-term moisture durability and surface hydrophobicity (via surface coatings or hydrophobic agents) to enhance dimensional stability and service life under humid and thermal environments.
