이를 바탕으로 전시 공간 인지 특성을 9가지 요소—흐름 유도성(F.D), 인지 연결성(C.C), 기억 구축성(M.C), 식 별 가능성(I.D), 서사 독립성(N.A), 구조 체계성(S.A), 문화 정체성(C.I), 위치 지 케빈 린치의 이미지 이론을 적용한 전시 공간 인지 요소 특성 연구 A Study on the Characteristics of Cognitive Elements in Exhibition Space by Applying Kevin Lynch's Image Theory

This study begins with a fundamental inquiry into what contemporary
exhibition visitors perceive and what they ultimately remember. In today’s
exhibition environment—where audiences select exhibitions through
SNS-driven information consumption—an exhibition space functions not
merely as a backdrop for artworks but as a field of cognition that
produces memory and accumulates experiential meaning. Despite this shift,
systematic analyses of what makes an exhibition memorable and which
spatial cues shape visitor perception remain insufficient. To address this
gap, the present research applies Kevin Lynch’s image theory to
exhibition spaces as a framework for explaining the cognitive experience
of visitors. Just as Lynch’s five elements—paths, nodes, edges, districts,
and landmarks—constitute the basis of urban cognition, this study assumes
that exhibition spaces form a similar cognitive structure through circulation,
spatial sequencing, segmentation, and symbolic elements.
The research proceeded through the following steps.
First, Chapter 1 established the necessity and purpose of the study,
framing exhibition spaces as cognitive structures in which perception, memory, and behavior interact. Second, Chapter 2 reviewed Kevin
Lynch’s image theory and related domestic and international studies to
construct the theoretical foundation. From this, nine cognitive elements
applicable to exhibition spaces were derived: Flow Directivity (F.D),
Cognitive Connectivity (C.C), Memory Construction (M.C), Identifiability
(I.D), Narrative Autonomy (N.A), Structural Articulation (S.A), Cultural
Identity (C.I), Locational Directive (L.D), and Spatial Saliency (S.S). Third,
Chapter 3 organized the correlations between these nine cognitive elements
and the spatial composition principles of exhibitions. Fourth, Chapter 4
analyzed ten cases—five museums and five art museums—by applying the
analytical framework established in Chapter 3 to compare how each
cognitive element manifested within different exhibition environments.
The conclusions derived from this process are as follows.
First, the most prominent common characteristics across all ten cases
were the structuring of perceptual flow and the clarification of visual cues.
Lighting contrast, color changes, openings, and large-scale installations
consistently functioned as mechanisms that guide movement, pause, and
focus—regardless of exhibition type. Second, the museum cases strongly
exhibited cognitive connectivity, memory construction, structural
articulation, and cultural identity. This is due to the narrative structure of
museum exhibitions—organized around time, events, and artifacts—where
material authenticity and historical context contribute to stable memory
formation. Third, museums showed weaker performance in locational
directive and spatial saliency, as directional guidance relied more on
signage and corridor structures than on exhibition objects themselves, and
visual impact was moderated to prioritize educational clarity. Fourth, art
museum cases strongly demonstrated spatial saliency, sensory immersion,
and identifiability. Reflective surfaces, high color contrast, hanging
installations, and large-scale objects transformed the space into an
integrated visual experience, with sensory expression driving the cognitive
structure. Fifth, art museums showed weaker cognitive connectivity, structural articulation, and cultural identity due to their emphasis on
experimental layouts and artwork individuality, which limited narrative
    continuity and unified cultural meaning.
In summary, the core finding of this study is that museums form a
    context–information–narrative-centered cognitive structure, whereas art
    museums form a sensation–visuality–experience-centered cognitive
structure. This indicates that cognitive characteristics of exhibition spaces
arise not solely from architectural form but from the interplay of
institutional purpose, curatorial intention, and visitor experience strategies.
The study holds academic significance in proposing a cognitive analytical
framework that clarifies how exhibition components are arranged and
interact, offering foundational insights for future exhibition planning and
spatial design aimed at structuring meaningful and memorable visitor
    experiences.
