Carbon fiber plates have been reported to enhance energy efficiency and propulsion in running footwear. However, it remains unclear how these performance benefits influence the mechanical characteristics of individual lower-limb joints. Previous studies have mainly focused on the hip, knee, ankle, and metatarsophalangeal joints, leaving the detailed kinematic responses of the foot joints to carbon plate intervention relatively unexplored. In addition, most studies have examined the effects of carbon plates at elite running speeds (>3.0 m/s), and their influence at moderate speeds (2.78 m/s) has not been clearly established. Therefore, this study analyzed the biomechanical changes induced by footwear with and without carbon fiber plates, which shared the same basic design, under a controlled running speed of 2.78 m/s.
Motion-capture data were collected and processed in OpenSim to perform inverse dynamics analysis. Seven male participants completed two 10-minute running trials for each footwear condition (carbon-plated, CP; and non-carbon, NC) at 2.78 m/s. A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to examine the main and interaction effects of footwear condition (CP vs. NC) and time (early: 0 to 2 minutes; late: 8 to 10 minutes). When interactions were significant, simple-effect analyses were performed. Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) was used to analyze time-series joint angle data. The significance level for all analyses was set at α = 0.05.
Kinematic analysis revealed significant differences in angular velocity and angular acceleration at the ankle and hip (p < 0.05). Significant condition-dependent differences in joint angles were also found at the midtarsal and subtalar joints, while angular velocities and accelerations differed at the midtarsal, metatarsophalangeal (MTP), and tarsometatarsal joints (p < 0.05). In the CP condition, angular changes were observed mainly in the distal joints, whereas differences in angular velocity and acceleration appeared in both proximal and distal joints, with overall lower magnitudes in the CP condition. Kinetic analysis showed that joint moment, power, and positive mechanical energy were significantly higher in the CP condition, particularly in distal joints (p < 0.001). Over time, these variables tended to increase in the CP condition, while they remained stable or decreased in the NC condition. Although positive mechanical energy also increased significantly in some proximal joints (p < 0.05), no time interaction was observed.
In summary, footwear with carbon fiber plates increased joint moments and mechanical energy in distal joints even at moderate running speeds, while reducing joint angular excursions and velocities. However, with continued running, increases in moment, mechanical power, and mechanical energy at the ankle and subtalar joints were observed, suggesting both improved propulsion and a potential increase in injury risk. This study provides insight into the effects of carbon fiber plates on lower-limb kinematics and kinetic during moderate-speed running and offers foundational data for future
research on running performance and injury mechanisms.
