Virtual interaction technologies play a crucial role in the digital age by connecting the physical world with cyberspace. Rapid advances in computer vision, artificial intelligence, and sensor technologies have positioned interaction in virtual spaces as a central research focus within the field of human–computer interaction (HCI). Technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR) enable users to engage with highly sophisticated digital environments, supporting interaction that is increasingly natural, immersive, and multimodal.
These technological developments extend beyond traditional interaction paradigms based on keyboards, mice, and screens. Instead, contemporary virtual interaction incorporates multiple modalities, including gesture-based input, voice interaction, eye-tracking, and brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). Such multimodal approaches enhance the intuitiveness of information acquisition and significantly increase the sense of realism in interactive experiences. As a result, existing models of human–computer interaction are being reconfigured, giving rise to new interaction paradigms that blur the boundaries between the physical and digital domains. Digital elements increasingly manifest within physical contexts, while physical actions are integrated into virtual environments. This convergence exerts substantial influence across diverse domains, including society, the economy, education, and healthcare.
Embodied cognition theory provides an essential theoretical foundation for understanding and optimizing interaction in virtual environments. This perspective challenges traditional computational models of the mind, which conceptualize cognition as abstract symbol processing independent of the body. In contrast, embodied cognition emphasizes that cognitive processes are deeply rooted in bodily perception, action, and continuous interaction with the environment. From this viewpoint, embodiment is not a peripheral component but a fundamental condition for the formation of cognition. Human learning and cognition therefore extend beyond brain-centered information processing to encompass whole-body engagement with the environment. Cognitive processes emerge through dynamic sensorimotor experiences, including visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive, gustatory, and olfactory perception. Through continuous bodily interaction with external surroundings, individuals construct experiential meaning that directly shapes cognitive outcomes.
Extending embodied cognition theory into digital and virtual spaces transforms conventional patterns of human–machine interaction and offers new pathways for examining cognitive development in the digital era. Unlike traditional perspectives that regard the body merely as a channel for information transmission, this approach conceptualizes the body as an integrated interface within virtual environments—simultaneously shaping interaction, cognitive processes, and contextual meaning. Consequently, this perspective expands the scope of cognitive research and establishes a new theoretical and practical foundation for the design and development of future interactive technologies.
