In recent years, youth drug abuse has rapidly intensified due to the expansion of online environments and the diversification of distribution channels. This issue should no longer be regarded as a problem limited to specific groups, but rather as a structural social challenge. In particular, non-face-to-face contact through social media and messaging platforms has significantly increased adolescents’ accessibility to drugs, revealing the limitations of existing prevention policies and educational approaches. Under these circumstances, youth drug prevention communication requires new strategies that go beyond simple information delivery and instead promote awareness change and voluntary participation. Based on this awareness, this study focuses on the potential of campaign characters as prevention communication tools that can engage adolescents in a more familiar and sustainable manner.
The purpose of this study is to plan and develop campaign characters for youth drug prevention and to explore the practical applicability of character-based prevention campaigns by implementing them as visual content. To this end, the study integrally designs character forms, narratives, and media applications while considering adolescents’ visual perception characteristics and digital media usage environments. The research methodology consists of three stages: literature review, case study, and practice-based research. The literature review examines the concept of drugs, the current status of youth drug abuse, and the definitions and functions of characters in campaigns. The case study analyzes the visual characteristics and application methods of characters used in domestic and international public and drug prevention campaigns.
Based on the results of these analyses, the practice-based research stage involved the planning and development of the youth drug prevention campaign character “Agent ZERO-FIVE.” This character system adopts a team-based structure composed of five characters, each with distinct roles and symbolic meanings, designed to convey prevention messages in a multi-layered manner. In addition, the characters were realized through 3D modeling and animation, and their applicability was demonstrated through proposed uses across various media, including posters, merchandise, short-form videos, card news, and participatory experiential content.
The findings indicate that character-based campaigns can function as effective communication tools for delivering drug prevention messages to adolescents in a more approachable and continuous manner. In particular, the combination of characters and video content was found to encourage voluntary participation and sharing among adolescents who are accustomed to digital media environments. This study is significant in that it demonstrates the roles that design and characters can play in addressing the social issue of youth drug prevention. However, the study is limited in that it does not include long-term effect verification or quantitative analysis involving actual adolescent groups. Future research should incorporate empirical analyses of awareness changes and participation sustainability following campaign implementation.
