집단 주거 환경에서 나타나는 비의도적 응시에 대한 회화적 표현 연구 : 본인 작품을 중심으로 = A Study on Pictorial Expressions of the Unintentional Gaze in Collective Residential Environments - Focused on the Researcher's Own Works -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2019년부터 2025년까지 제작된 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 현대인의 집 단 주거 환경 속에서 나타나는 비의도적 응시를 어떻게 시각 예술로 표현할 것인지 를 다룬다. 연구자가 소재로 그리고 있는 풍경은 집단 주거의 대표격인 아파트 건축 에서 주로 볼 수 있는 모습으로, 아파트에 거주하는 연구자가 어느날 새벽에 창 밖 을 내다보았는데, 맞은편의 창 안의 풍경이 순간적으로 눈에 확 들어오게 된 것을 계기로 작업을 시작하게 되었다. 아파트와 같은 공동 주거는 많은 사람들을 근접한 거리에서 생활하게 한다. 고층 아파트가 밀집된 고밀도의 주거 환경에서는 집과 집 사이의 거리가 가까워 타인의 사적인 공간을 쉽사리 볼 수 있다. 연구자는 타인의 사적 공간을 의도치 않게 목격하게 되는 상황에 주목하고 이러한 응시를 ‘비의도적 응시’라 정의하였다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 연구의 중심이 되는 ‘비의도적 응시’라는 개념에 대해서 정확 한 정의를 위해 응시가 언어적으로 어떤 의미를 가지고 있는지 정리한다. 그리고 응 시라는 개념에 대해서 집중적으로 분석하기 위해 사르트르의 ‘타자’와 ‘시선’의 개념 과 라캉의 시각 예술 이론의 ‘응시’의 개념을 정리하여 연구자의 작품에서 나타나는 ‘비의도적 응시’를 설명한다. 또한 현대 도시의 건축공간이 타자의 응시를 어떻게 허 용하고 있는지, 아파트 건축과 베란다를 분석하며 알아보고 이에 대한 것이 연구자 의 작품 속에서 어떻게 표현되고 있는지를 분석한다. 마지막으로 연구자의 작품에서 나타나는 비의도적 응시가 불러일으키는 문제와 그럼에도 불구하고 심리적으로 타인 을 훔쳐보고자 하는 욕망에 대해서 생각하며 비의도적 응시를 통하여 생각해봐야 하 는 점을 성찰해 본다. 이 연구를 수행하게 된 목적은 연구자의 작품에 등장하는 ‘비의도적 응시’에 대한 고찰을 통하여 연구자의 작품이 갖는 응시의 성격에 대해서 분석하고 작품의 시각적 표현의 발전 방향을 모색해보기 위함이다. ‘응시’로 인해 발생하는 침해는 비의도적 인 상황에서도 문제가 되는지, 작가가 보인다고 모든 걸 다 그려도 되는 것인지, 애 초에 저곳은 왜 보이는 것인지 다양한 질문을 던져보고 이에 대해 연구자 나름의 답 을 찾아보았다. 또한 연구자의 작품 속에서 이러한 응시가 어떻게 표현되고 있고, 어 떤 구성을 사용하여 표현하였는지 작품 분석을 통하여 조형적 측면을 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 통하여 연구자의 작업물은 도시의 풍경 속에서 발견한 시선의 문제를 어떻게 회화로 표현할 수 있는지를 탐색한다. 또한 밀집된 도시의 아파트에서의 삶 이 갖는 단조롭고 기계적인 일상에서, 연구자가 평생을 살아온 익숙한 공간이기에 느끼는 편안함과 도시에 거주하는 사람들이 폐쇄성으로 인하여 공통적으로 느끼는 외로움 사이에서 연구자는 응시를 어떻게 바라볼지 고찰한다. 이를 통해 연구자의 작품은 응시를 중립적으로 보는 것이 아닌 관계를 만들어 내는 것이란 걸 상기시키 고, 보는 것과 보여지는 것의 경계 지점을 되짚으며 시각적 질서와 시선의 정치학을 동시대 회화의 언어로 탐구한다. 연구를 진행하며 연구자는 응시와 어떻게 관계를 맺을 수 있는지 생각하는 것을 통하여 익숙한 도시 공간 속에서 당연하게 여겨지던 문제를 다시 생각해보는 것을 다룬 연구자의 작품 세계가 한층 더 심화될 수 있게 되었다. 이후 해당 논문의 연구가 연구자의 작업을 성장하게 해주는 계기가 될 수 있기를 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines how to express unintentional gazes in the collective
residential environment of contemporary society can be represented through visual
art, focusing on the researcher’s works produced between 2019 and 2025. The
landscapes depicted in the researcher’s work are scenes commonly observed in
apartment complexes, the quintessential form of mass housing. The project began
when, one early morning, the researcher—who resides in an apartment—looked
out the window and was suddenly struck by the vivid scene unfolding in the
building opposite. In densely populated high-rise apartment environments, the
proximity of living spaces often makes it easy to see into others’ private interior
spaces. The researcher paid attention to the experience of unintentionally
witnessing the private spaces of others and defined such an act of seeing as an
“unintentional gaze.”
To establish a clear definition of the concept central to this study, the research
first reviews the linguistic and theoretical meanings associated with the gaze. It
then analyzes the concepts of the Other and the gaze in Sartre’s philosophy, as
well as Lacan’s theory of the gaze in visual art, to explain how the notion of the
unintentional gaze emerges in the researcher’s works. Furthermore, the study
examines how contemporary urban architectural spaces permit the gaze of others,
analyzing apartment architecture and balconies, and explores how these spatial
structures are visually interpreted within the researcher’s pieces. Finally, the
research considers the issues raised by the unintentional gaze and reflects on the psychological desire to look into others’ lives, questioning what should be
reconsidered through this form of gazing.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the nature of the gaze represented in
the researcher’s work through a critical examination of the unintentional gaze,
and to explore potential directions for advancing visual expression. The research
addresses questions such as whether violations caused by the gaze become
problematic even in unintentional situations, whether an artist may freely depict
everything they can see, and why such visibility exists in the first place.
Through an analysis of the works, the study also investigates how the gaze is
visually expressed and what compositional strategies are employed.
Through this research, the study explores how the issue of the gaze discovered
in the urban landscape can be expressed through painting. Within the
monotonous and mechanical routines of life in dense high-rise apartment
environments, the researcher reflects on how to understand the gaze amid the
tension between the comfort found in a familiar lifelong living space and the
loneliness commonly experienced by urban dwellers due to spatial confinement. In
doing so, the researcher’s work reminds us that the gaze is not a neutral act but
rather an agent that forms relationships. It reexamines the boundary between
seeing and being seen, and investigates visual order and the politics of the gaze
through the language of contemporary painting. Throughout the research process,
contemplating how one engages with the gaze led the researcher to revisit issues
long taken for granted within familiar urban spaces, thereby deepening the
artistic practice. It is hoped that this study will serve as a foundation for further
growth in the researcher’s creative work.
