This study establishes Spinoza's Science of Feelings as a systematic foundation for dance theory and explores the essence of emotional expression in Chinese and Korean classical dance. In particular, it investigates how Spinoza's perspective—which views emotion not as a mere psychological phenomenon but as bodily modification—can provide revolutionary insights into dance theory. Unlike previous dance theories that primarily separated body and emotion from a dualistic perspective, this study emphasizes the necessity of emotions and the integrated nature of body-emotion.
In the Science of Feelings, emotion is not an event of the mind but a modification of the body. This connects with the Neo-Confucian concept of xingfaweiqing (性發爲情, nature manifesting as emotion), which aligns with Spinoza's theory in viewing emotion as necessarily manifesting from the nature of the body. Specifically, Spinoza's concept of conatus, which refers to every being's fundamental effort to maintain and expand its existence, provides a crucial framework for understanding dancers' emotions and movements.
Based on this theoretical foundation, this study analyzed how emotions are necessarily expressed in dance from three cognitive dimensions. First, it explored the relationship between sensory cognition and dance perception. Second, it analyzed how rational cognition connects with dance composition. Third, it examined the essential relationship between intuitive cognition and dance creation. Additionally, it presented new criteria for judging the naturalness and beauty of dance, which depend not on technical perfection or formal completeness but on how truthfully the pure goodness of emotion is revealed.
For this analysis, the Chinese classical dance "Zhu Huan" (朱鹮, Crested Ibis) and Korean traditional dance "Seungmu" (僧舞, Monk's Dance) were selected as primary subjects. While these dances express emotions in different cultural contexts, they fundamentally demonstrate the necessity of emotions that Spinoza discusses. "Zhu Huan" embodies the characteristic of Chinese dance as "expressing internal emotions through external imitation," while "Seungmu" realizes the unique Korean aesthetic of "sublimating emotions through internal restraint." Particularly, by reinterpreting Korean dance concepts such as "pungyu" (風流, elegant flow), "meot" (멋, refined style), and "heung" (興, spontaneous joy) from the perspective of the Science of Feelings, this study revealed how these culturally specific concepts connect with universal emotional theory.
Chapter 4 theoretically analyzed the influence of traditional philosophy on dance psychology. It investigated how East Asian traditional philosophies—Wang Yangming's philosophy of mind and Seonghak Sipdo (聖學十圖, Ten Diagrams of Sage Learning)—affect contemporary dancers' dance stress, dance flow, and performance self-efficacy. Significantly, it discovered meaningful differences in the pathways through which traditional philosophical cognition influences dance psychological variables between Chinese and Korean dancers. Chinese dancers showed strengths in stress management due to the influence of Wang Yangming's "unity of knowing and acting" (知行合一) thought, while Korean dancers exhibited higher flow states influenced by the "movement within stillness" (靜中動) concept of Seonghak Sipdo.
The research confirms that Spinoza's Science of Feelings can provide a new paradigm for dance theory. Specifically, the perspective of emotional necessity and body-emotion integration offered an important framework for understanding the essence of dance. Additionally, through a cross-cultural approach between Eastern and Western philosophy, it successfully captured both the universal understanding of emotions and cultural specificities simultaneously.
The significance of this study can be summarized in three points. First, it established the Science of Feelings as a systematic foundation for dance theory. Second, through comparative analysis of Chinese and Korean classical dance, it clarified both the cultural universality and specificity of emotional expression. Third, by theoretically analyzing the influence of traditional philosophy on contemporary dancers' psychology, it presented the necessity of culturally adaptive dance education. However, limitations remain in terms of insufficient empirical verification and restricted research scope, which should be supplemented through follow-up studies.
On a personal level, this research was a journey for a dancer who left the stage due to injury to explore the essence of dance through theory and rediscover identity as a dancer. The unique position of being born in China and studying in Korea enabled understanding both cultures from an insider's perspective while maintaining objective distance, which became a strength in cross-cultural research. Through this study, it was confirmed that dance is an important pathway to understanding the essence of human existence beyond being merely an art form, and future research will continue to explore various aspects of dance from the perspective of the Science of Feelings.
