This study investigates contemporary expressions of Chinese Spring Festival
culture from the perspective of the Science of Feelings Taking
emotion as the central axis of interpretation, it analyzes how the Spring Festival
functions as an affective institution that reshapes family ethics and cultural
identity under conditions of rapid social change, urbanization, and digital media.
Unlike previous studies that have mainly focused on ritual forms, policy
discourse, or tourism and consumption, this dissertation foregrounds the
emotional structure of the festival and examines in detail the subtle differences
that emerge across generations and between rural and urban spaces.
The theoretical framework combines the Science of Feelings with classical
Confucian family-ritual thought and Spinoza’s theory of affects. In this view,
emotion is not a purely psychological state but the embodied manifestation of
life’s essential tendencies and the fundamental basis of ethical relations. On this
basis, the study constructs a three-dimensional analytic frame of action, emotion,
and cognition, and applies it to three axes of comparison: intergenerational
change, folk practices, and rural–urban space.
Methodologically, the research adopts textual analysis and philosophical
interpretation as its main methods, while also drawing on the author’s lived
experiences of celebrating the Spring Festival in both rural and urban contexts,
as well as existing qualitative and quantitative surveys, media reports, and
statistical data. Through this approach, the dissertation seeks to clarify how the
affective structure of the Spring Festival is being reconstructed in contemporary
Chinese society.
First, by comparing the parents’ generation, which grew up under the planned economy, with the children’s generation shaped by market reform and digital
culture, the study shows a shift from a duty-oriented collective festival—
centered on filial piety, family hierarchy, and collective identity—to a more
individualized festival that emphasizes vacation, personal choice, and diversified
experiences. Nevertheless, the underlying emotional logic of gratitude toward
parents and the longing for family harmony remains largely intact.
Second, by analyzing core folk practices such as ancestral sacrifice, New
Year’s Eve family dinner, pasting Spring Festival couplets, giving and receiving
red envelopes, and setting off fireworks, the study interprets these actions as
embodied emotional practices. They reorganize the “emotional community” of the
family, transform fear and anxiety into joy and release, and visually materialize
shared memories and values through symbols and colors.
Third, a comparison between rural and urban Spring Festivals reveals that,
while rural areas still preserve more intensive ritual tension and community
cohesion through activities such as slaughtering New Year pigs and village-level
ceremonies, urban celebrations tend to be reshaped by apartment life, safety
regulations, commercial events, and platform-based consumption such as Spring
Festival films, shopping malls, and online promotions. Across both contexts,
however, the spread of digital red envelopes, online greetings, and “cloud
celebrations” indicates that mediated forms of connection are increasingly used
to maintain emotional bonds across physical distance.
The findings confirm that the Science of Feelings (感情科学) provides a
productive framework for reinterpreting the Spring Festival as an affective
institution rather than a mere collection of customs. The dissertation proposes
the concept of the “mediation of emotion” to explain how digital media and
commercialization simultaneously fragment festival experiences and open new
possibilities for emotional connection. In doing so, it reconsiders the widespread
discourse of the “waning New Year atmosphere” not simply as the decline of
tradition, but as a transformation in the modes and media of emotional practice.
Ultimately, the study argues that the Spring Festival continues to play a crucial
role in sustaining happiness, family cohesion, and cultural identity in
contemporary China, while also offering implications for the safeguarding and
renewal of traditional festivals in the digital age.
