As a representative of traditional Dai dance art, the Peacock Dance embodies the cultural identity and aesthetic spirit of the Dai people. Based on the theoretical foundations of Peacock Dance art research, Dai dance culture, and aesthetic value, this paper systematically analyzes the historical development of the Peacock Dance. It elucidates the dynamic transformation of this dance form—from its origins in the ethnic beliefs of the Dai people, where it served as an essential traditional folk dance for blessings and grand ceremonies, to its current status as a stage art.
The findings indicate that the physical expression of the Peacock Dance primarily showcases the "three-bend" posture of the body, incorporating numerous hand movements, fluid footwork reminiscent of flowing water, and gestures that imitate the demeanor of a peacock. Through the use of unique hand props and intricate hand gestures, the dance conveys its content and meaning. The musical accompaniment is mainly composed of traditional Chinese instruments such as the hulusi(gourd flute) and the xiangjiaogu(elephant-foot drum), characterized by their lively rhythm and rich musicality, which blend seamlessly with the dance movements.
At the level of cultural symbolism, the Peacock Dance embodies the Dai people's reverence for the peacock and their belief in the harmonious unity of
humans and nature through its unique form of expression. By imitating the demeanor and posture of the peacock, such as strolling through the forest with movements synchronized to the music, the dancers demonstrate respect for the peacock faith and admiration for its beauty. Simultaneously, it showcases the ethnic characteristics of the Dai people, blending graceful softness with a resilient spirit.
This study indicates that the Peacock Dance, as a contemporary performance form, is evolving toward greater theatricality and professionalization, with significant advancements in both technical precision and artistic expression. The dance not only demonstrates a distinct artistic style but has also become an important vehicle for conveying ethnic identity and perpetuating cultural traditions. Through research methods such as literature analysis, field investigations, and intertextual interpretation, this paper systematically examines the developmental trajectory and artistic vocabulary of the Peacock Dance. The findings reveal that, within the unique cultural context of the Dai people, the Peacock Dance has progressively transitioned from a folk ritual dance to a modern stage art. By organically integrating costumes, props, music, stage presentation, and body language, it has established a distinctive performance system.
In terms of formal characteristics, its symbolism, rhythmic sensibility, and improvisational expression are particularly notable. These elements not only encapsulate the emotions and spiritual pursuits of the Dai people but also serve as key sources of the dance's artistic appeal. Building on these traits, this study has engaged in creative choreographic exploration, infusing contemporary aesthetic concepts while preserving traditional foundations, thereby revitalizing the Peacock Dance with new artistic vitality.
This research provides a theoretical framework for interpreting the cultural connotations of the Peacock Dance and fostering cross-ethnic artistic dialogue. At the same time, it offers valuable insights for contemporary dance choreography, contributing positively to the innovation of the Peacock Dance within the context of inheritance. Furthermore, the study analyzes its choreographic techniques, musical structure, costumes, and props, exploring feasible pathways for achieving creative integration between traditional art and modern aesthetics in the context of global cultural convergence.
In summary, this study concludes that the Peacock Dance has transcended the realm of mere folk dance to become an artistic essence of Dai culture, embodying the creative transformation and innovative development of China's outstanding traditional culture. It holds profound value and significance in promoting the dissemination of ethnic dance and enhancing cultural confidence.
