The Bai ethnic group is one of the 55 recognized ethnic minorities in China, primarily distributed in the low-latitude plateau region of northwestern Yunnan Province, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. Against the backdrop of rapid modernization and urbanization in China, the preservation of ethnic minority cultures has increasingly become an important issue at both policy and academic levels. Over the course of its long historical development, the Bai have formed relatively systematic cultural characteristics, which are widely reflected in social structure, religious beliefs, language and art, dietary practices, traditional festivals, and the organization of architectural spaces, thus holding significant academic research value. The inheritance of Bai culture is not only evident in historical documents or material heritage but is also concretely manifested in daily life practices, the composition of residential spaces, and community order. Within this cultural context, “space” functions as a primary medium for carrying, transmitting, and expressing Bai culture, reflecting the social structure and religious beliefs of Bai society while also demonstrating strategies for adapting to the natural environment.
Xizhou Ancient Town serves as an important representative case of Bai traditional cultural space, preserving numerous historically valuable architectural remains and community spatial structures, and providing an empirical foundation for studying Bai cultural spaces. The formation of Xizhou Ancient Town can be traced back to the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom periods, during which villages and towns occupied a central position in social, political, and economic systems. In addition, the area was located at the traffic and commercial center of the ancient Tea Horse Road, with thriving trade activities and close economic and cultural exchanges with surrounding regions. This historical background not only defined the social function of Xizhou within the local society but also profoundly influenced the formation and development of Bai residential spaces.
This study aims to explore the cultural characteristics of the Bai, one of China’s ethnic minorities, through a systematic examination of historical, natural, and cultural conditions. Xizhou Ancient Town, as a representative example of Bai traditional space, is the primary research object, and the study systematically analyzes how Bai cultural genes are manifested within spatial contexts.
The research findings are as follows:
First, Xizhou Ancient Town is located within the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, on the terminal range of the Hengduan Mountains in the Yungui Plateau. The plateau contains the Erhai Basin and exhibits a year-round monsoon climate. Under the rainy and windy conditions of the monsoon season, Bai residential spaces in Dali gradually developed spatial types adapted to the plateau environment and basin monsoon characteristics, reflecting cultural traits with regional adaptability.
Second, through an analysis of Bai culture, the study identifies core cultural elements from multiple dimensions, including residential life, religious beliefs, crafts, and family systems, which are concretely reflected in the spatial structures of Xizhou Ancient Town.
In terms of religious beliefs, the Bai concept of “all things possess spirits” reflects the interdependent relationship between humans and nature. Religious practices coordinate social order with the natural world, forming spaces that combine natural and spiritual qualities. The Bai philosophy of “Three Teachings in Unity” integrates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, creating religious spaces characterized by pluralistic coexistence. The notion of “unity of humans and gods” closely links religious rituals with village society, making religious activities part of everyday life and reflecting the lived quality of sacred spaces.
Regarding craft and artistic practices, Bai tie-dyeing conveys the community’s aesthetic awareness and spiritual beliefs through symbolic motifs such as butterflies. Painted artworks demonstrate diversity through color contrasts and the integration of religious color systems, while wood and stone carvings employ sophisticated techniques and three-dimensional structures to convey spatial realism and artistic value.
In residential and lifestyle aspects, traditional Bai dwellings are organized around a central courtyard, with clear spatial order and multifunctional layouts. Screen walls serve multiple purposes including feng shui, protection, and transmission of family maxims, while doors and windows reflect the symbolic and artistic continuity of traditional design. Courtyards integrate living, social interaction, and production functions, displaying multifunctionality and inclusiveness.
Regarding family culture, the combination of patrilineal inheritance and multi-generational cohabitation establishes a clear spatial hierarchy, reinforcing internal ethical order and family cohesion. Household ritual systems are institutionalized and implemented at multiple levels, increasing participation and cultural transmission. These ritual spaces—including ancestral halls, clan temples, and graveyards—reflect bloodline order and spatial hierarchy, demonstrating clear stratification.
Finally, based on the analysis of Bai cultural characteristics, the study conducts field surveys of commercial, residential, and religious spaces in Xizhou Ancient Town to summarize spatial expression characteristics.
First, in commercial spaces, the Sifangjie Square in Xizhou displays diverse spatial characteristics. Dining areas are for short-term stays and provide both culinary enjoyment and social interaction. Cultural goods stores integrate consumption with cultural experience, while stone archways signify commemoration and aggregation. Signage maintains spatial order, stone benches and tables promote rest and social interaction, and paved surfaces enhance spatial hierarchy and legibility. Dining activities are closely linked to daily life, resulting in flexible and everyday-oriented spatial boundaries. The “Title Archway” functions as a symbolic local node, providing orientation, social interaction, and rest, reflecting the daily integration of life and culture. Dining spaces primarily employ wooden structures and courtyard-centered layouts, utilizing natural materials such as plants, stones, and bamboo to realize harmonious coexistence with nature, reflecting Bai architectural wisdom and regional food culture. Tea houses, cafes, and inns preserve traditional Bai architectural elements while combining cultural display and modern commercial functions, forming hybrid spaces where tradition and modernity coexist. Courtyards and corridors of commercial inns incorporate plants, water features, and small gardens, bringing nature into the interior architecture and creating spaces that integrate ecology, daily life, and culture.
Second, regarding residential ecology, Bai traditional courtyards and corridors employ bluestone flooring, vegetation, and semi-open spaces to achieve harmony between life and nature. Interior furnishings are simple and practical, fulfilling functions of rest, appreciation, and storage, demonstrating multifunctionality and everyday usability. The traditional “Three Courtyards and One Screen Wall” structure forms a centralized layout, with corridors connecting buildings and facilitating both dynamic and static functions. Courtyards and corridors maintain the traditional arrangement of main rooms, side rooms, and screen walls. Wood and stone carvings and traditional patterns are well preserved, highlighting artistic and heritage value. The representative “Yan Family Compound” integrates Taoist halls, ancestral halls, clan temples, and guardian spaces within corridors, merging religious and daily life and creating a spatial layout of coexisting beliefs. Courtyards serve as the core circulation and interaction spaces for family members, main rooms symbolize family identity, and bedrooms maintain privacy while sustaining family connectivity, enhancing cohesion. The layout of gates, bedrooms, and studies reflects family hierarchy, with gates signifying status, bedrooms arranged by generation, and studies following seniority. Courtyards use vegetation to regulate microclimates, improve temperature and air quality, and provide aesthetic and functional circulation zoning, forming an ecological environment integrating nature and life. Painted screens, roofs, and gates feature natural motifs and auspicious patterns, expressing reverence for nature and prayers for fortune and peace. Modern residential spaces simplify courtyards and exterior forms but adopt functional and efficient interior layouts. Combining traditional wooden structures with modern facilities achieves a composite of cultural, aesthetic, and living functions. Modern courtyards and corridors integrate new materials while retaining traditional functions, resulting in visually appealing, practical, and comfortable spaces. Living rooms and bedrooms balance lighting, ventilation, and privacy, creating spaces that merge tradition with modernity and multifunctionality with comfort.
Third, regarding religious spaces, the Buddhist ritual space of Wuwei Temple demonstrates vivid sculptures and exquisite carving techniques at the entrance and interior, emphasizing details of the statues with simple architectural forms to create a solemn spiritual atmosphere. Courtyard vegetation, landscape murals, and natural reliefs harmonize the architecture with the environment, reflecting aesthetics of human-nature coexistence. Longquan Temple utilizes guardian stone lions, symmetrical courtyards, and traditional wooden corridors to preserve the formal and spiritual inheritance of Buddhist architecture.
In Taoist ritual spaces, religious areas are integrated into daily life, with street temples available for immediate ceremonies. Courtyard spaces in Taoist temples serve as open public religious areas, and household incense represents the continuation of religious practice. This everyday integration of religious activity reflects the lived quality of space. Taoist temples adopt a compound layout with a central axis, connecting corridors and ritual spaces to strengthen spatial integration. Multi-deity rituals and symmetrical stair designs symbolize order and cohesion, spatially realizing collective religious expression. The “Benzhu Temple” presents a multi-layered arrangement of deities and painted murals, forming a pluralistic ritual system that enhances visual depth and artistic value, demonstrating the coexistence of religious, aesthetic, and symbolic qualities. The Dali Kingdom royal ritual space employs a central-symmetrical layout to emphasize hierarchical structure, with deities at the center and attendants on the sides, establishing a clear order that signifies the hierarchical authority of religious practice.
The results of this study indicate that the commercial spaces, residential spaces, and religious spaces of Xizhou Ancient Town collectively exhibit spatial characteristics such as diversity, coexistence, everydayness, collectivity, naturalness, symbolism, hybridity, and hierarchy within the cultural system of the Bai ethnic group. These characteristics fully demonstrate the intrinsic relationship between Bai traditional culture and spatial form, as well as its cultural value. Accordingly, as a representative case of Bai traditional cultural space, Xizhou Ancient Town possesses significant practical applicability in the fields of architectural conservation of ethnic minorities and regional cultural studies in China. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the interpretation of spatial composition and cultural meaning in the conservation of Bai traditional spaces, proposes practical pathways for promoting the sustainable transmission of Bai culture, and offers valuable academic references for the construction of spatial cognition systems centered on regional culture as well as for the renewal and regeneration of traditional ethnic cultural spaces.
At the same time, it should be acknowledged that this study still has certain limitations in terms of research scope and methodology. First, with regard to the selection of research objects, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of Xizhou Ancient Town as a representative case of Bai traditional cultural space. While this approach facilitates a systematic interpretation of its spatial structure and cultural characteristics, it remains insufficient in terms of horizontal regional comparison and comprehensive coverage of different types of Bai settlements. Therefore, the applicability of the conclusions to other Bai settlements requires cautious verification in conjunction with specific local contexts. Second, in terms of research methods, this study primarily adopts a combined approach of literature review, spatial morphological analysis, and field investigation. The reconstruction of spatial evolution during certain historical periods is still constrained by the completeness of historical records and the availability of extant physical evidence, making it difficult to conduct more quantitative and long-term analyses of the dynamic mechanisms underlying spatial change.
Furthermore, with the increasing intervention of tourism development, commercial utilization, and modern residential practices, certain traditional spatial functions and patterns of use in Xizhou Ancient Town are undergoing transformation. This study mainly focuses on spatial characteristics within the context of traditional culture and does not provide a systematic discussion of spatial functional transformation under contemporary social change, nor of its impacts on cultural transmission. These issues remain topics for further in-depth investigation in future research.
