The value transformation among contemporary Chinese youth is defined as a profound shift unfolding within the macro-context of China's economic restructuring and the acceleration of urbanization. This process results from multiple factors operating in combination: the modern transformation of traditional thought; the internalization of collective identity associated with the Red Culture spirit (Chinese Red Culture Spirit); changes in family structure driven by the one-child policy; and the rise of digitized social connections and flexible employment forms. It is characterized by a dynamic equilibrium in which traditional and modern elements intersect.
In traditional social structures, the family functions as the basic unit of production and everyday life, and individual identity and social relations are organized around kinship and lineage (zongzu). However, the one-child policy has, while reducing family size, invisibly strengthened the self-awareness and independence of the younger generation. Moreover, large-scale population mobility associated with urbanization “disembeds” many young people from their original family- and locality-based networks and incorporates them into urban environments marked by a “society of strangers.” In this context, young people display strong demands for individualized expression, community belonging, and sustainable lifestyles. Their modes of social interaction shift from reliance on ascribed kinship ties to activity-based companion relationships founded on shared interests, values, and ways of life (the so-called “dazi” relationships). Such a model satisfies needs for emotional companionship and practical cooperation while reflecting a modern interactional norm that values equality and respect for independence.
Amid the diversification of youth housing needs, traditional housing modes struggle to respond effectively because of their single-function orientation and economic pressures. As an emergent alternative, shared housing not only alleviates financial burdens but also promotes social interaction and emotional support through the creation of community common spaces. Nevertheless, existing research has tended to concentrate primarily on the economic models and spatial functions of shared housing, with relatively limited inquiry into the internal linkage between “values” and “space.”
Drawing on Schwartz's basic values theory and Inglehart's post-materialism, and situating the analysis in the Chinese context, this study examines the modern transformation of Confucian culture with respect to youth self-cultivation and community consciousness; the role of the Red Culture spirit (Chinese Red Culture Spirit) in shaping collective orientations and social responsibility; and the influence of the one-child policy on independence and norms of peer selection. From four dimensions—personal autonomy, quality of life, cultural identity, and sustainability—the study extracts the core features of youth value change and, on this basis, proposes four required characteristics for shared-housing space: guidance, inclusiveness, cooperativity, and resilience. Guidance encompasses hierarchies of visibility and accessibility; inclusiveness comprises functional hybridity and temporal adaptability; cooperativity emphasizes interaction nodes and ambience building; and resilience focuses on flexible spatial boundaries and structural variability.
The study selects representative shared-housing projects in Shanghai (e.g., Base Zhangjiang [Base 张江], Cohost Houshe [Cohost 后社], and Yijian Apartment [壹间公寓]) as case studies, and conducts in-depth analyses across spatial layout, service functions, and community-building dimensions to verify the logical linkage between spatial characteristics and youth value demands.
Furthermore, the study integrates shifts in youth values with shared-housing spatial design to construct a theoretical linkage of “values–spatial characteristics.” It underscores that shared housing is more than a housing solution under high-density urban conditions; it also serves as an important medium enabling youth self-expression, community belonging, and sustainable living. The findings provide theoretical grounding and practical guidance for youth-oriented urban housing policy, community-space planning, and housing product design.
